The Jaguars Foundation, Action Sports Jax and Whataburger have partnered to present Whataburger Coach of the Year to Coach Robert Shields of Baldwin High School and Whataburger Player of the Year to running back Orel Gray of University Christian School.
Coach Robert Shields of Baldwin High School has been named the 2022 Whataburger Coach of the Year. Shields is an exceptional leader on and off the field and separates himself by not only focusing on the athlete but on the importance of building great character in each of his athletes. He offers support and resources for his team to achieve academic excellence and prepares his athletes for college and the next steps in life. The Jaguars recognized Coach Shields by providing a $2,500 grant back to his athletic program and surprising him with two tickets to Super Bowl LVII.
RB Orel Gray has been named the 2022 Whataburger Player of the Year. During his time at University Christian School, Gray finished with a high school career-high of 4,199 rushing yards backed by 536 total carries. Gray ended with a staggering 62 all-purpose rushing touchdowns and 38 receptions for 631 yards. On the defensive side of the ball, Gray concluded with 106 total tackles, 75 being solo, and 16 interceptions. Completing his success on and off the field, Orel Gray, a senior at University Christian School was named first-team all-state defensive back and running back.
