Veteran Tashaun Gipson SR. Returns to a Transformed Jaguars Team: "It's a Whole Different Ballgame"

0813 Camp Day 15

JACKSONVILLE – He's back, which is a good thing for Tashaun Gipson Sr..

And if Gipson re-signing with the Jaguars meant returning to the team after five seasons, there was a lot new in this as well.

"It's a whole different ballgame," Gipson said.

Gipson, a 13-year veteran safety who played with the Jaguars from 2016-2018, re-signed with the team Sunday. He returned to a Jaguars team dramatically different on the field – with only guard Tyler Shatley, left tackle Cam Robinson and punter Logan Cooke remaining – and dramatically different off of it as well.

"Just seeing this is just super cool," he said of the Jaguars' new training facility, the Miller Electric Center. "You can see things are turning around here on the field and off the field."

Gipson, after playing for the Houston Texans in 2019 and the Chicago Bears in 2020-2021, played with the San Francisco 49ers the past two seasons. He is among multiple veterans acquired by the Jaguars since the end of the 2023 season with extensive postseason experience including defensive tackle Arik Armstead, wide receiver Gabe Davis, cornerback Ronald Darby, center Mitch Morse and wide receiver Devin Duvernay.

"That is huge," Gipson said. "Everybody's physically gifted. They're all physically talented or else they wouldn't be here, but a lot of the things are above the shoulders. I try to spread wisdom as much as I can to these young guys and hopefully, it sticks to them.

"The guys have welcomed me in. I'm old enough to be some of these guys' dads. It's humbling, the respect that the guys have given me since I stepped foot in this locker room. I'm excited to just be able to give those guys what I've got physically and mentally for sure."

Gipson started 48 of 48 games in his three seasons with the Jaguars, intercepting six passes, and said he has "nothing but love for the city, the organization from the bottom of my heart."

"I'm grateful they had enough respect for me as a man, as a player, as a person to bring me in here and give me an opportunity," he said. "I'm just going to try to be a resource and try to pick these guys' brains and kind of go from there."

If he makes the roster, Gipson will serve a six-game, NFL-mandated suspension for performance-enhancing drugs.

NOTABLE MOMENTS FROM JAGUARS TRAINING CAMP - DAY 15

  • Jaguars offensive coordinator Press Taylor on Tuesday reemphasized a point many have made around the Jaguars this week – that he liked the enthusiasm shown by teammates following rookie wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr.'s 41-yard reception in a Preseason Week 1 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs Saturday. "I think that catch can go a long way," Taylor said. "You saw the energy he had after the catch. The cool part was our sideline. You saw the guys go wild for him, come on the field, give him a high five." Taylor added of Thomas, the No. 23 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft, "We see that skillset flash all the time. He makes plays here and there. He has done it through spring, done it through camp. Guys are just excited for him. Anytime a rookie comes in, puts his head down, works hard, guys can root for that. Everybody wants him to have success. When a guy makes a play like that, it's a good thing for him moving forward, but for everybody around him as well to see that and believe in him."
  • Taylor also said second-year wide receiver Parker Washington is working this season at outside receiver positions in addition to the slot roles he played mostly as a rookie. "We're kind of trying to find the role he could play and maximize throughout the year," Taylor said. "You want everybody that's available to you on game day to have some sort of role. We've tested him and we've been very pleased with what we've seen so far of him playing out of the slot." Washington caught 16 passes for 132 yards with two touchdowns in nine games last season. "It does feel like a fresh start being pretty much fully healthy and just ready to roll," Washington said. "It just has been about being able to prove my value and expand what I can do. It has been exciting to be able to get those opportunities and take advantage of them. I'm just excited to expand my role a little bit."
