JACKSONVILLE – He's staying mostly quiet and he's working.
Which is to say Brian Thomas Jr. is being himself and doing his job as Jaguars 2024 Training Camp continues at the Miller Electric Center. That's what's expected of the rookie wide receiver as he prepared for his first NFL season.
So far, so good.
"I've been getting better each and every day," he said.
Thomas, the No. 23 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft, spoke to the media Wednesday following Day 12 '24 camp practice. While Thomas has spoken to reporters throughout camp, this was his first post-practice media availability. Among the topics:
His chemistry with quarterback Trevor Lawrence, from whom Thomas caught a long touchdown pass in practice Wednesday – a play that qualified as one of the week's highlight plays.
"I feel like it's growing each and every day, getting better and better with more reps," Thomas said of his chemistry with Lawrence. "We're both new to each other, so it's going to take reps, take experience getting with each other. So I feel like it's been growing each and every day.
Thomas and Lawrence first began working with one another shortly after April's draft, both participating in all organized team activities. That work toward cohesion has continued in the first 12 days of camp.
"We've been getting it down, just running the routes, being able to go out there and do it," he said. "Then talking through it, watching the film together, seeing how he sees it, telling him how I feel like it should be or something like that.
"Just going out there and doing it and getting actual practice reps helps a lot."
One way the soft-spoken Thomas said he was improving daily was being outgoing with coaches and veteran teammates, who have joked throughout camp about Thomas' low-key demeanor.
"I've been receptive to it," he said of his teammates efforts to have him be a bit more outgoing. "I've been getting a little bit more comfortable, opening up a little more each and every day, talking a lot more."
Thomas could have been speaking about his overall play, which appeared to have improved throughout the last two weeks.
"I feel like it's been pretty good," Thomas said. "Just coming out here each and every day trying to do my best, put my best foot forward and work hard; each and every day get better. But I feel like it's been going pretty good, pretty smooth."
Thomas on Wednesday made one of his biggest plays of camp to date – a juggling catch for a long touchdown from Lawrence despite tight coverage by cornerback Ronald Darby.
"It felt great, just to be back in the endzone, get a good catch like that," he said.
He said, too, a main focus has been learning all three of the Jaguars' receiver positions – something that is an emphasis for most receivers who play in Head Coach Doug Pederson's offense.
"It's very real, just having to be able to play all three positions – been able to play inside, outside, and just do it all," he said. "They move you around, try to get the best look for you, get the best matchup for you. It's very challenging, but just coming out here and doing it every day, you'll get better at it. You'll get better and better.
"It's very exciting just being able to play both outside and inside, do a little bit of everything, run a lot of routes, run a lot of different routes, and be able to showcase my talent and my skills – just be able to go out there and do things I know I can do."
NOTABLE MOMENTS FROM JAGUARS TRAINING CAMP - DAY 12
Defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen on Wednesday lauded the play during '24 camp of linebacker Chad Muma. A third-year veteran, Muma was listed in this week's unofficial depth chart as a co-starter at weak- and strong-side linebacker. "He's a multi-position player," Nielsen said of Muma. "One of the things in OTAs – he did a really good job – he played all three spots. He can rush the passer; he drops into coverage. So just what his skill set allows you to do, a little bit more with him within the scheme that we do. He's done a great job in terms of understanding the scheme. And he has gotten better fundamentals and technique-wise. You're definitely seeing an improvement."
