OC Press Taylor Highlights Lawrence's Progress and Offensive Chemistry at Camp

0804 Camp Snapshot

JACKSONVILLE – It's fine, and it's better than the alternative.

But when it comes to the in-camp "improvement" of quarterback Trevor Lawrence, Press Taylor said it is perhaps a bit overblown as a Jaguars 2024 Training Camp storyline.

"That's just kind of how training camp goes," Taylor said.

Taylor, in his third season as the Jaguars' offensive coordinator, spoke to the media before Day 10 '24 camp practice at the Miller Electric Center Sunday morning. It was a one-hour, 15-minute session in 84-degree temperatures.

Lawrence on Sunday turned in a solid day to finish a solid week for the fourth-year veteran. But while Lawrence followed a Week 1 in which he threw multiple interceptions with a turnover-free Week 2, Taylor on Sunday reiterated what Pederson said earlier this week – that early camp interceptions aren't necessarily a major concern.

"We encourage them (quarterbacks) to kind of see what you can get away with," Taylor said. "Not in a reckless way, but if they play a certain look, maybe we're not necessarily thinking a certain route, but right here, 'Let's take a shot at it.'

"There are times we'll tell them to see if they play this, try this. He's going to let the thing go."

Taylor, too, discussed the cohesion and chemistry of the offense with veterans such as Lawrence, running back Travis Etienne Jr., wide receiver Christian Kirk and tight end Evan Engram all entering their third season in Head Coach Doug Pederson's offense.

"When we get in these competitive situations against our defense, as competitive as it can be, you see Trevor kind of pull out different tools within the offense and those guys don't flinch at all," Taylor said. "Those guys are right there communicating really well.

"That's something we talk about, Trevor growing within the system and taking ownership of it. Trevor can get you into whatever you need to depending on the look or the situation as it goes. We don't want the guys around him to flinch. We want them to just kind of react naturally or even anticipate that stuff as it goes."

Here's a look at Sunday's practice:

PLAY OF THE DAY

While Sunday's light day produced few big plays, rookie cornerback Jarrian Jones turned in one of the better interceptions of '24 camp. Jones, a third-round selection in the 2024 NFL Draft, covered wide receiver Denzel Mims deep down the right sideline and intercepted a deep pass from reserve quarterback C.J. Beathard.
