NFL Draft Day 1: Jaguars Make Massive Splash With Travis Hunter

Draftervations - Day 1

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars shocked the NFL world Thursday.

They did so by moving aggressively for the player they believe is the best prospect in the 2025 NFL Draft, selecting Colorado wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter No. 2 overall. They traded up with the Cleveland Browns from No. 5 overall.

Four Jaguars media members – senior writer John Oehser, senior correspondent Brian Sexton, senior reporter/editor J.P. Shadrick and team reporter/producer Kainani Stevens – will share an observation following each day of the 2025 NFL draft.

Day 1 NFL Draft Observations

  • Senior Writer John Oehser: Wow. Double wow. And triple wow. The Jaguars not only shocked the NFL world Thursday, they did so in historical fashion when they moved up three spots to select University of Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter with the No. 2 overall selection in the '25 draft. The terms: The Jaguars sent Nos. 5, 36 (Round 2) and 126 (Round 4) overall in the '25 draft and a first-round selection in the '26 draft to the Browns with the Browns sending Nos. 2, 104 (Round 4) and 200 (Round 6) overall in the '25 draft to the Jaguars. The level of equity sent to Cleveland makes it clear how much the Jaguars believe in the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner, a player who many analysts consider not only the draft's best wide receiver, but its best cornerback as well – and certainly its best overall prospect. The Jaguars view this as a selection of two elite players rather than one, and the expectation is Hunter will contribute in a big way on both sides of the ball. That's unconventional on a scale that never has been seen in the NFL, and Hunter has potential to be a dynamic player of the type the league has rarely – if ever – seen. Make no mistake: Thursday night's trade means Hunter joins quarterback Trevor Lawrence as the Jaguars' keystone – and most important – players. Is the trade a gamble? Absolutely. But this decision-making team – Head Coach Liam Coen, Gladstone and Executive Vice President of Football Operations Tony Boselli – promised to be bold when taking over this offseason. Draft moves get no bolder than the one the Jaguars made Thursday night.
  • Senior Correspondent Brian Sexton: Hunter walked into the Club Media space at Lambeau Field 30 minutes after he was drafted by the Jaguars, smiled and said, "Nice to see you again." I lead with that because Coen, Gladstone and Boselli said they were looking for great people who were great players and that moment made it abundantly clear to me that Hunter is a perfect fit for the culture they're building in Jacksonville. Hunter and I had the briefest of conversations on Wednesday after a Play60 event as the skies were threatening. Considering Hunter has answered thousands of questions from hundreds of reporters, it spoke volumes of his character that he recalled our conversation. He didn't have to do that. It's the kind of human touch you rarely get from a superstar athlete these days and it was a powerful statement of who is – and what he is about. That Hunter is a remarkable talent you knew from his Heisman Trophy season, but what you will come to learn is why he is the man the Jaguars wanted to start this exciting new chapter in their history with – and why they were willing to pay a high price to make sure he will bring the dual threat he poses on offense and defense to Duuuval.
  • Senior Reporter/Editor J.P. Shadrick: Jaguars leadership promised to be bold when they took over this offseason, and the trade up to select Hunter proved they mean business. There hasn't been an every-week two-way player in the last few generations in the NFL – think Chuck Bednarik era, when the sport was totally different. The Jaguars essentially used this year's first-round pick on the best receiver in this year's draft, and next year's first-round pick on the best cornerback in this year's draft. Even though the Jaguars do not currently hold a second-round pick in 2025 after the deal, they still have the same amount of picks remaining. This is a massive addition and a perfect way to set the tone for the new era of Jaguars football. I can't wait to see him in the building Friday – and to see what the rest of the weekend holds.
  • Team Reporter/Producer Kainani Stevens: How about that for a big splash? Gladstone certainly did not flinch at the very first opportunity to be bold, orchestrating a massive trade to move up from No. 5 to No. 2 and select Hunter – a tremendous athletic talent and truly a star on both sides of the football. Hunter will do something unprecedented for the modern-day NFL, as Coen on Thursday confirmed that Hunter will play both offense and defense for the Jaguars. The Jaguars will lose their second-rounder Friday and their first rounder in 2026, but if Hunter is everything experts predict, that is a price I'm willing for the Jags to pay. Let the record show that when Boselli took an informal poll of Jaguars employees last week on who we wanted to add to the team, Hunter earned my vote. Game on!
