Jaguars Focus on Trevor Lawrence's Growth and Protection for Future Success

0228 TREVOR IS FUTURE

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Trevor Lawrence must thrive, and he must be protected.

Those were themes around the Jaguars during this week's 2025 NFL Scouting Combine, with Head Coach Liam Coen and General Manager James Gladstone prominently mentioning the starting quarterback when speaking about the franchise's future.

"He's our guy; he's the franchise," Coen said.

The Jaguars' future is about Lawrence, and Gladstone said he believes that future is bright.

"I don't think we've seen the best of Trevor," Gladstone said.

Lawrence, the No. 1 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft, will enter the 2025 season with his third head coach/offensive coordinator combination. It will be his first season working with Coen, offensive coordinator Grant Udinski, quarterbacks coach Spencer Whipple and pass-game coordinator Shane Waldron.

Lawrence spent his rookie season playing for Head Coach Urban Meyer and offensive coordinator Darrel Bevell, with Head Coach Doug Pederson and Offensive Coordinator Press Taylor working with Lawrence the past three seasons.

"He hasn't had the stability," Coen said. "It's important, but he has learned so much from his different experiences for good and for bad. He can take those experiences to really dive into this new process."

Coen this week spoke of the importance of establishing a routine and process in which Lawrence can grow and thrive.

"We truly focus on him, not as much where he's been, what he's had." Coen said. "He can take and log those experiences. Now how do we create a little bit of sameness, give him a schedule, 'Hey, Mondays, this is what we want, look for your daily rhythm?' Tuesdays within the season …

"How do we connect with him to have a schedule? That's the consistency that we're going to try to create for him."

Added Coen of Lawrence, "He wants to be great. He wants to be coached hard. How do we get him on a schedule, a process every single day that he can follow to get him to the point that he feels like he's playing at a higher level?"

Gladstone when discussing Lawrence this week emphasized not only Coen's schemes and coaching, but building the roster to further protect and develop the fifth-year veteran. He specifically discussed the offensive line – and even more specifically, the interior offensive line.

"I'm really excited for Liam to get a chance to work with him, support him, and we bring the tools that he has in his arsenal to life," Gladstone said. "I think it starts by the protection, making sure that he feels like he has as much time to work with as possible, and also that he's comfortable with the pass-catchers.

"I think through that lens, he's going to feel that change in both the operation schematically, and then the personnel that we invite in to building."

Coen spent last season as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offensive coordinator, with quarterback Baker Mayfield throwing a career high 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns. Coen said while Mayfield and Lawrence are different players and therefore will develop differently, they share similarities in work ethic and desire, adding that Lawrence will be involved on some level in building personnel around him.

"We want to have Trevor's input," Coen said. "He's hungry. He wants to be playing at the highest level possible, and how do we include him in some of those conversations, specifically with some of the skilled players and obviously on the offensive line.

"He will definitely be involved in some of that while just being mindful of not putting too much on it because he's going to be learning a completely new system and having to go through a new transition again."

WNOTABLE DETAILS

  • While the Jaguars' new coaching staff is comparatively young in spots, Coen said this week he views the group through a different lens. "Hunger, hunger, want-to, guys that are trying to prove it, guys that want to continue to ascend throughout the profession," Coen said of the staff.
  • Coen is 39, with defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile 42 and Udinski 29. "We have plenty of experience to get this thing done," Coen said. "I believe in the staff that we built. I have [Los Angeles Rams Head Coach] Sean McVay. I have [Minnesota Vikings Head Coach] Kevin O'Connell. I have a lot of guys we can go and call in times of crisis that are going to be more than welcome to some of those conversations. We have experience throughout the staff. We have a lot of guys that have been in the trenches in some really productive organizations. There's not one coach we hired that didn't have another opportunity."
