NFL Media and Jaguars Media Analyst Bucky Brooks Analyzes Jaguars vs. Bears | Scout's Take

1016 Scouts Take

JACKSONVILLE – In a weekly feature for the 2024 season, NFL Media and Jaguars Media analyst Bucky Brooks breaks down the Jaguars' performance in a 35-16 Week 6 loss to the Chicago Bears at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London

BIG IMPRESSION

  • After picking up their first win in Week 5 and seemingly building some momentum that could spark a run, the Jaguars dropped a stinker against the Bears. The team committed countless self-inflicted errors, enabling the home team to coast to a lopsided victory. With their star players fumbling, dropping passes, committing egregious pre-snap penalties and blowing assignments, the Jaguars did not stand a chance against a playoff-caliber team.

KEYS TO VICTORY

  • The Jaguars' miscues were too numerous to overcome against the Bears. Despite a solid week of practice, the Jaguars made a series of gaffes that made them look like an undisciplined and poorly prepared squad. With a team leader (safety Andre Cisco) questioning the effort of his teammates based on their lackluster performance, the Jaguars are entering crisis mode, sitting at 1-5, coming off a blowout loss. While the tape will suggest the Jaguars gift-wrapped the win to the Bears, it is hard to discredit an opponent that forced two turnovers and controlled the game for three-plus quarters.

TREVOR'S TIME

  • After a sizzling start that sparked an impressive initial drive, Lawrence could not make enough plays to keep the offense on the field or put points on the board to keep the game competitive. Though his wideouts let him down repeatedly with dropped passes in crucial moments and a critical fumble, No. 16 is expected to get the offense going when it sputters. Whether it requires him to use his legs to pick up a few first downs on impromptu scrambles or designed quarterback runs, or an occasional lighting into his teammates on the sidelines to hold them accountable for their play, the Jaguars need Lawrence to play and lead like a franchise quarterback when they are underperforming.

UNSUNG HERO

  • Linebacker Ventrell Miller and cornerback Montaric Brown continue to impress as super-subs on a defense that needs their energy and effort. The duo has played like blue-chip players in their respective roles, displaying the toughness and tenacity coaches covet in starters. Moreover, they have earned more playing time with their stellar play as part-time on a unit that is still looking for its identity.

OFFENSIVELY SPEAKING

  • The offensive struggles continued in Week 6 with the self-sabotage due to turnovers, penalties and mental errors. The Jaguars cannot get out of their own way, and their self-inflicted mistakes continue appearing in crucial moments. While Head Coach Doug Pederson sounds like a broken record in his postgame press conferences pointing out the mistakes plaguing the team's performance, it is time for the players to take responsibility for their poor performance and find a way to fix it before Week 7.

DEFENSIVELY SPEAKING

  • The Jaguars' defensive woes were not effort-related before Week 6, but Cisco's comments regarding the unit's effort are alarming. Though it appeared the defense played hard and did not succumb to the "here we go again" mentality that accompanies a series of losses, the veteran safety might have pulled the curtain back on what ailed the defense against the Bears. From allowing the Bears to run up and down the field to the defense's inability to get off the field on key downs, the Jaguars' defensive breakdowns continue to happen at the worst times. Perhaps the return of several key veterans will help the unit settle down, but the last few weeks are part of a disturbing trend that has contributed to the team's losing ways.
