Jaguars Sign Wide Receiver Derrick Townsel to Contract

The Jacksonville Jaguars signed rookie wide receiver Derrick Townsel to a contract today.  Townsel, 23, was not drafted following his four-year career at Murray State.  The Jaguars waived rookie wide receiver Jason Harmon to make room on the roster.

Townsel, 5-9, 175, recorded 153 career receptions for 1,712 yards and five touchdowns while also serving as a return specialist.  As a senior, Townsel finished with 44 receptions for 452 yards and garnered second-team All-OVC honors. He had a 22.7-yard kickoff return average on 24 returns and a 24.1-yard average on nine punt returns.

In 2008, he totaled 53 catches for 667 yards and three touchdowns in nine games.  He posted a career-high 11 receptions for 199 yards and a touchdown against Tennessee Tech and added a seven-reception 165-yard outing against Austin Peay.  He played in 10 games as a sophomore and had 37 receptions for 259 yards and two touchdowns.  As a freshman, he registered 234 receiving yards on 19 receptions.

A native of Miami, Townsel attended Overton High School in Memphis where he earned all-region honors as a senior while also lettering in baseball. Townsel will wear number 14.
