Jaguars Set High Expectations as 2024 Training Camp Begins

0723 Camp Day 1 - V@

JACKSONVILLE – Trevor Lawrence understands the objective.

He's not alone as the Jaguars open 2024 Training Camp, with the fourth-year quarterback making clear Wednesday he grasps the meaning of the high-profile offseason that just ended – and the importance of the season at hand.

The core of the team is set. The aspirations are, too.

Lawrence was among multiple recently drafted Jaguars players to sign long-term extensions this offseason, with the team also extending edge defender Josh Hines-Allen and cornerback Tyson Campbell.

"We're trying to build a standard around here to be an organization that plays in late January and February," Campbell said. "We’re setting the standard and building a winning culture around here."

Lawrence was the No. 1 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft, with Allen the No. 7 overall selection in the 2019 NFL Draft. The Jaguars selected Campbell No. 33 overall in '21. The team this offseason also extended the contract of veteran linebacker Foye Oluokun.

"I think it shows a commitment from the organization that the guys that have been drafted here can be here long term," Head Coach Doug Pederson said. "That's a great message for a lot of the young players that we draft – and potentially undrafted guys."

Jacksonville, Fla. — Jaguars cornerback Tyson Campbell (32) during training camp at the Miller Electric Center on July 24, 2024.

The Jaguars before Allen's extension had signed just two first-round selections to contract extension in the last decade – defensive lineman Tyson Alualu (No. 10 overall, 2010) and quarterback Blake Bortles (No. 3 overall, 2014).

"If you can lock those guys down and get them extended, you try to do it regardless of what's going on, how much money you got," Pederson said. "You just find the way. You work through it. With all three of them, it took some time, but at the same time, it was three guys we focused on and we wanted to make sure that guys that were drafted here stay here. I think in the past that hasn't been the case. You let good players out the door and you can't do that."

The moves ensure that three "foundation positions" – starting quarterback, edge rusher and corner – are under contract with the Jaguars for the foreseeable future.

"It gives you that peace of mind as well, especially at the quarterback position," Pederson said. "You can just focus on ball. It's the same with Josh and Tyson, all those guys. They're big-money guys and each one of them deserves what they got. It's because of their play on the field.

"It sends a great message to the rest of the team that if you do things right, both on and off the field, you can be rewarded for it."

The signings of Lawrence, Hines-Allen and Campbell represented a reported $272.8 million guaranteed by Jaguars Owner Shad Khan.

"It shows the belief that he has in us and that feels really good as players to have that from the owner and from the organization," Lawrence said. "He talked to us as a team the other night. He's putting his money, his time, all these things behind it, and backing it, and really putting a lot into it. He has high expectations for us. We've kind of been lingering around a little bit the last couple of years, but this is our opportunity. We need to take advantage of it."

NOTABLE MOMENTS FROM JAGUARS TRAINING CAMP - DAY 1

  • Pederson on Wednesday said he is not yet ready to announce who will call plays this season. Offensive coordinator Press Taylor called plays last season after Pederson and Taylor split the duties in 2022, with Pederson calling plays in the first half of games and Taylor calling them in the second halves. "We're still in discussions with all that and not ready to make a public decision yet," Pederson said.
  • Pederson said he expects to follow his normal approach this preseason when it comes to playing preseason snaps. Pederson typically has played starters extensively in the preseason except in games that follow a practice week against an opposing team. The Jaguars will play host to the Kansas City Chiefs in Preseason Week 1 August 10 and play host to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Preseason Week 2 August 17 before playing at the Atlanta Falcons in Preseason Week 3 August 23. The only week in which they will practice against another team is Preseason Week 2. "When Tampa comes here, we get a lot of work done, a lot of great work for the starters, so I usually hold them out of that game," Pederson said. "But [Preseason Weeks] 1 and 3, we'll definitely play the starters. It's selective. But I like playing them. They need to play. They need to have that sense of urgency. They need to feel game readiness. So, I'm playing them."
