Jaguars Practice Heats Up With Joint-Practice on Horizon With Buccaneers | Campservations, Day 15

0813 Campservations

JACKSONVILLE – Jaguars 2024 Training Camp continued Tuesday.

It was the 15th day of the third training camp under Head Coach Doug Pederson, featuring a padded, contact practice at the Miller Electric Center. Each day throughout camp, members of Jaguars Media – senior writer John Oehser, senior correspondent Brian Sexton, senior reporter/editor J.P. Shadrick and team reporter Kai Stevens – will share an observation.

Here are Tuesday's "campservations:"

John Oehser, Jaguars Senior Writer…

The end of '24 camp is in sight, with joint practices with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Wednesday/Thursday marking in a sense the end of the camp grind. But Tuesday morning absolutely had a "grinding" feel – and despite the practice not being overly physical, multiple players appeared to feel the effects of another long, padded practice in the Florida heat. Rookie wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. continued to flash, making an acrobat reception in coverage on the sideline on a pass from quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Rookie kicker Cam Little also continues to show easy leg strength, converting on his first two field goals from 53 and 55 yards before missing from 54 yards near the end of practice.

Tuesday was quietly a challenging practice. Not that you would have seen it on the field in the actual drills, which looked as they have since training camp began in July. But when the players took their helmets off on the sidelines, it was clear that this practice was straining them – which is exactly what head coach Doug Pederson wants as we get to the joint-practices with the Buccaneers on Wednesday and Thursday. The Jaguars had Sunday off and a light day Monday, but needed to get tuned up for what will undoubtedly be more intense sessions Wednesday and Thursday. And because they're pushed back an hour, they will also be hotter and more difficult. This summer camp seems to have been more physical and demanding than it was a year ago. My sense is Thursday will tell us a lot about this team's readiness for the regular season.

The Jaguars returned to pads Tuesday with 10 strong periods in the Florida heat, and there were a few great catches that stood out from Thomas and running backs Jalen Jackson and Gary Brightwell. The big difference Tuesday: NFL officials worked practice, led by referee Brad Allen. They are scheduled to stay all week for joint practices against the Buccaneers and Saturday's Preseason Week 2 matchup. I saw assistant coaches talking to officials on the side of drills going through specific items and taking advantage of the time together. These days with officials at practice are great for coaches and players to ask specific questions about rulings, rule changes and what they're seeing to help better understand things that come up week after week.

Second-year wide receiver Parker Washington has impressed throughout training camp. That continued on Tuesday. Washington made an impressive catch during the teams period that was contested by safety Antonio Johnson. Washington was candid in post-practice media availability that he felt he struggled a bit last year trying to adapt to the NFL while injured. After a restorative offseason, I expect we will see a notable jump in production from Washington during the regular season. He will play a critical role in the return game and his role in the offense continues to develop as well.
