Defense Shines Under Nielsen's Energy, Chippiness Adds to High Spirits | Campservations Day 11

0805 Campservations

JACKSONVILLE – Jaguars 2024 Training Camp continued Monday.

It was the 11th day of the third training camp under Head Coach Doug Pederson, featuring a padded, contact practice inside the Miller Electric Center. Each day throughout camp, members of Jaguars Media – senior writer John Oehser, senior correspondent Brian Sexton and senior reporter/editor J.P. Shadrick – will share an observation.

Here are Monday's "campservations:"

John Oehser, Jaguars Senior Writer…

Monday's practice was a bit shorter than normal and it was also indoors – neither of which made this day less intense. In fact, multiple 11-on-11 drills felt like some of the most spirited in '24 camp to date – and the practice got uber-spirited toward the end. That was when cornerback Montaric Brown leveled wide receiver Gabe Davis a bit harder than normal for a practice, with Brown standing over Davis a bit longer than necessary. Wide receiver Christian Kirk came off the "sideline" without a helmet and leveled Brown, with multiple offensive and defensive players getting involved for a strikingly populated training camp fracas. While this was chippiness on a relatively high level, practice resumed quickly with seemingly few aftereffects. "Guys are getting a little chippy out there," Davis said. "That's football. It is what it is." Of Kirk's reaction, Davis smiled and said: "As he should. I couldn't defend myself. I appreciate those guys going out there doing what they did. It was funny." Good stuff on an entertaining Monday.

Brian Sexton, Jaguars Senior Correspondent …

Defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen brings a lot of energy and attention to detail to the practice field and on Monday, his influence was clear. The defense dominated the action, whether it was the first team or the third unit. They were flying all over the field and it was fun to watch them play. This is clearly a less complex scheme that lets guys read, react and play fast – and as you might expect at this point of training camp, it's starting to come together. It got chippy Monday, as you would also expect, and there were a few hits the coaching staff would rather not see during practice. But it's not a bad thing to have guys getting in each other's faces after a play. The game requires passion and a fair measure of anger. I thought everyone responded as they should have, then backed off and remembered they're all on the same page. It was a good mix of needed intensity and measured response on Monday.

Due to Hurricane Debby, the Jaguars moved inside the MEC for a full practice in pads, and the intensity did not slow down as the defense ruled the day. Safety Andre Cisco intercepted three passes, one from each of the three Jaguars quarterbacks. There were a couple skirmishes in practice, most notably when cornerback Brown hit Davis with a blindside tackle and both sidelines cleared. It's pretty obvious that this team is about ready to play another team, and Head Coach Doug Pederson said before practice that he normally plays starters at least a couple series in the first preseason game.
