A Journey Through the Uniform History of the Jacksonville Jaguars

JACKSONVILLE – The past is returning.

That became official on Thursday, July 18th at 9:04 a.m., with the Jaguars announcing that they will wear their much-anticipated "Prowler Throwbacks" uniforms during the 2024 season.

The Prowler Throwbacks will make their debut in Week 5 against the AFC South-rival Indianapolis Colts at EverBank Stadium.

The Prowler Throwbacks get their name from the running Jaguar embroidered on the sleeves of the jerseys, which also feature a vintage three-color number. The pants feature a teal stripe with gold and black piping along the length of the pants. The helmets will have the original Jaguars logo on the side used by the team in the inaugural season of 1995 until 2013.

The Jaguars wore the original version of the Prowling Jaguar uniform from 1995-1997 and a similar version with detailed changes from 1998-2008. According to Jaguars Head Equipment Manager George Pellicer, the Prowler Throwbacks to be worn this season are based on the 1998-2008 uniform.

The Jaguars since 2008 have worn three different uniform designs. With that in mind, senior writer John Oehser examines the Jaguars' uniforms – and each uniform's best moments – through the years:

1995-2008

This was the longest stretch for any of the Jaguars' four uniform designs, essentially spanning the franchise's first 14 seasons.

The uniform: White jerseys with teal numbers with gold and black outlines; teal jerseys with white numbers with gold and black outlines.

The white jersey featured black numbers with teal and gold outlines from 2004-2008. White pants with gold, teal and black stripes; both white and teal jerseys featured a "prowling Jaguar" on sleeves trimmed in black and gold.

There were some variations in details during this era in number design and shape. The Jaguars in 2002 introduced black jerseys and black pants in this design, with the jerseys featuring white numbers trimmed in teal and gold. Some versions of the black pants featured teal, gold and black stripes with a Jaguars logo on the hip while some did not have stripes.

Head coaches: Tom Coughlin (2002), Jack Del Rio (2003-2007).

The Jaguars rallied from a 12-0 first-half deficit with 23 consecutive points across the second, third and fourth quarters to secure what at the time was the biggest postseason upset in NFL history.
  • Jaguars 62, Miami Dolphins 7. AFC Divisional Playoff at Alltel Stadium in Jacksonville. January 15, 2000. The Jaguars backed up their status as the AFC's top seed entering the 1999 postseason with one of the most one-sided postseason performances in NFL history, sending Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino into retirement and advancing to the AFC Championship game. The Jaguars, who finished the 1999 regular-season 14-2 and won their second consecutive AFC Central title, led 24-0 after a quarter and 41-7 at halftime. Their dominance was total, outgaining the Dolphins 520-131, forcing seven turnovers and outrushing Miami 257-21.
  • Jaguars 29, Steelers 22. Week 15 at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. December 17, 2007. This was a key game in the Jaguars run to a second playoff appearance in three seasons. Playing in cold conditions, the Jaguars held off a late rally to become the first road team to win in Pittsburgh that season. Running back Fred Taylor rushed for 147 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries, and his 12-yard touchdown run with 1:57 remaining broke a 22-22 tie. The Jaguars outgained the Steelers, 421-217 and had 25 first downs to 13 for the Steelers.
  • Jaguars 31, Steelers 29. AFC Wild Card Playoff at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. January 5, 2008. Less than two months after winning at Heinz Field, the Jaguars lost an 18-point second-half lead before rallying for a dramatic victory. The victory made the Jaguars the first team ever to win in Pittsburgh twice in the same season and also marked their first postseason victory in nearly eight seasons. The Jaguars won despite being outgained 340-239 and despite the Steelers having the edge in first downs, 24 to 14. The Jaguars, who forced four turnovers, trailed 29-28 when they took possession at their 49 with 2:38 remaining. Quarterback David Garrard turned in one of the most memorable plays in franchise history, running 32 yards on fourth-and-2 from the Steelers 43. Kicker Josh Scobee's 25-yard field goal then gave the Jaguars a 31-29 and the defense secured the victory.

  • Jaguars 31, Colts 28. Week 4 at EverBank Field in Jacksonville. October 3, 2010. The Jaguars continued a tradition of dramatic, memorable victories over their AFC South rival – and Scobee continued his tradition of heroic moments in the series. Scobee, who twice before had beaten Indianapolis with long late-game field goals, turned in his best kick in this vein and his 59-yard field goal that beat the defending AFC Champions that day remains a franchise record.
  • Jaguars 31, Texans 24. Week 10 at EverBank Field in Jacksonville. November 14, 2010. The Jaguars once again during a memorable 2010 season scored a dramatic home victory on the game's last play – this time on Garrard's "Hail Mary" touchdown pass to wide receiver Mike Thomas. The Jaguars took a 17-3 halftime lead with second-quarter touchdown runs of nine and three yards by running back Maurice Jones-Drew, but the Texans tied it entering the fourth quarter with a one-yard touchdown run by running back Arian Foster and Andre Johnson's nine-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Matt Schaub.
