Geep Chryst is in his second season as a pro scout for the Jaguars. He most recently served as the tight ends coach/offensive coordinator for the University of California, Berkeley (2021-22). After thirty-plus years as a coach in both the NFL and collegiate ranks, 2023 marked Chryst's first season in a scouting department.
Chryst brings a wealth of NFL experience to Jacksonville including two seasons as an offensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers (1999-2000). He also worked previously with Jaguars General Manager Trent Baalke with the San Francisco 49ers (2011-15). While Baalke was the general manager, Chryst served as the quarterbacks coach for four seasons and offensive coordinator for one. He also tutored the tight ends at Carolina for five seasons (2006-10) and had two coaching stints with Arizona (1996-98, 2001-03), coaching the tight ends in his first season with the Cardinals in 1996 and quarterbacks in his final five. Chryst started his NFL coaching career in Chicago (1991-95) working in quality control and as the Director of Research.
He coached previously in the collegiate ranks in 1987 as the quarterbacks coach at Wisconsin-Platteville. Chryst was also an offensive graduate assistant at Wisconsin for one season in 1988 and spent two campaigns at Wyoming coaching the offensive line (1989) and quarterbacks (1990) before his first NFL position with the Bears in 1991.
Chryst comes from a strong football and athletics family that includes his late father George who was the former Wisconsin-Platteville head football coach and athletic director and also coached for the University of Wisconsin. His brother Paul was the head coach at Wisconsin while his other brother Rick was the commissioner of the Mid American Conference. His oldest son Keller played quarterback at the University of Tennessee and Stanford and his son Jackson played quarterback at Oregon State and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
