Ron Milus enters his first season in Jacksonville as secondary coach. He brings 34 years of coaching experience, including 25 years in the NFL, to Jacksonville.
Milus spent the last three seasons in Indianapolis (2022-24) as the Colts' defensive backs coach. In that span, the Colts ranked tied-11th in the league with 41 interceptions, including tying for fifth in 2024 (16). S Nick Cross registered a career-high 146 tackles, the second-highest total in the league in 2024 among defensive backs and the most by a Colts defensive back in franchise history. CB Jaylon Jones also registered a career-high 100 tackles, making Indianapolis the only team last season with two defensive backs with 100-plus tackles. In 2023, Milus helped S Julian Blackmon set single-season career highs in tackles (88), solo tackles (65), tackles for loss (five), passes defensed (eight), interceptions (four) and fumble recoveries (two). CB Kenny Moore II ranked in the top three in the NFL among cornerbacks in numerous categories, including tackles (second; 93), solo tackles (second; 68) and tackles for loss (tied-second; eight).
Prior to Joining the Colts, Milus spent one season (2021) as defensive backs coach for the Las Vegas Raiders. The Raiders finished the year sixth in the AFC in total defense (337.2 yards allowed per game) with a 10-7 record, clinching their first postseason berth since 2016. Under Milus' leadership, S Tre'von Moehrig (PFWA) and CB Nate Hobbs (PFF) were each selected to All-Rookie Teams.
Milus spent eight seasons with the Chargers as secondary coach from 2013-16 and defensive backs coach from 2017-20. Milus also made NFL stops with the Denver Broncos (2000-02 and 2011-12), Carolina Panthers (2009-10), St. Louis Rams (2006-08), New York Giants (2004-05) and Arizona Cardinals (2003).
After being named the defensive backs coach in 2017, the Chargers allowed an average of 329.6 total yards per game and 212.3 net passing yards per game, marks that ranked sixth and fourth in the NFL, respectively, over that four-year span. The team finished top 10 in net passing yards allowed in each of his four seasons as defensive backs coach, including two top-five finishes.
In 2020, the club allowed just 223.6 yards per game through the air, ranking ninth in the NFL and fourth in the AFC. Leading the way for Milus' secondary was fourth-year CB Michael Davis, who led the team with a career-high three interceptions including one returned for a touchdown. Davis also posted a career-high 63 tackles and 14 passes defensed, tied for eighth-most in the NFL.
In 2019, Milus mentored a position group that saw S Rayshawn Jenkins lead the team with a career-high three interceptions, while CB Casey Hayward Jr. recorded two of his own and earned Second-Team All-Pro honors from Pro Football Focus. In 2018, Milus coached rookie S Derwin James to First-Team All-Pro, All-Rookie and Pro Bowl honors, while also having CB Desmond King garner Second-Team All-Pro recognition. Hayward Jr. earned his second-consecutive Pro Bowl nod in 2017 after posting four interceptions and the second-most passes defensed (22) in the NFL. That season, the Chargers ranked fourth in the NFL with 18 interceptions, 14 of which came from the secondary.
From 2013-16, Milus' unit saw S Eric Weddle earn Pro Bowl nods from 2013-14 and CB Jason Verrett garner the honor in 2015. Milus tutored Hayward Jr. to a career-high seven interceptions in 2016 in his first season with the club, as he became the first Chargers defender to capture the NFL's interceptions crown outright since the 2007 campaign. That year, the team saw 11 different players record an interception, the most in the NFL by any one team and most by a Chargers team since 2004.
Before joining the Chargers, Milus spent two seasons (2011-12) in his second stint with the Broncos as the team's secondary coach. In 2012, the Broncos led the NFL in fewest yards allowed per pass, ranking second in total defense and third in pass defense en route to capturing the AFC West crown and earning the top seed in the AFC playoffs. Milus coached CB Chris Harris Jr., who returned two of his three interceptions for touchdowns, while helping CB Champ Bailey earn his 12th trip to the Pro Bowl.
Prior to his second stint with the Broncos, Milus coached the secondary of the Panthers for
two seasons after making stops with the Cardinals, Giants and Rams from 2003-08. In his first stint with the Broncos from 2000-02, Milus spent his first two seasons as the team's defensive backs coach before focusing on nickelbacks in 2002. The team compiled 21 interceptions on defense in 2000, the club's highest total since 1987. In 2001, he coached CB Deltha O'Neal to a Pro Bowl selection after tying for third in the NFL with nine interceptions.
Before entering the NFL ranks in 2000, Milus coached at Texas A&M as defensive backs coach
after spending eight seasons with his alma mater at the University of Washington, including the last seven (1992-98) as defensive backs coach after starting as a graduate assistant in 1991. Milus began his coaching career in 1988, starting at his alma mater, Lincoln High School in Tacoma, Wash.
Milus and his wife, Sandra, have two sons, Ryan and Bobby.
