Jamel Mutunga joins the Jaguars coaching staff as an offensive quality control coach after spending the 2023 season with the Carolina Panthers as an offensive assistant. Prior to his time in Carolina, he served as offensive assistant in 2022 for the Indianapolis Colts through the inaugural Tony Dungy Diversity Coaching Fellowship.Â
Before starting his NFL coaching career, Mutunga spent two seasons (2020-21) as an offensive assistant at Rutgers University, working primarily with the running backs. While with the Scarlet Knights, Mutunga helped RB Isiah Pacheco earn All Big-Ten Honorable mention in 2021. In Mutunga's first season, Rutgers' offense had a program best 26.7 points per game. The Scarlets Knights' offense was the fourth-most improved unit in the nation by scoring offense in 2020.Â
Mutunga spent three seasons (2017-19) on staff at Princeton, where he coached the Tigers' running backs. Princeton's backfield shined under the watch of Mutunga, as the Tigers produced the Ivy League's top rushing offense in the 2018 season (2,955 total yards). Princeton went 8-2 in 2019, undefeated in 2018 and showcased back-to-back top-10 FCS team rushing totals in 2017 and 2018.Â
During his Princeton tenure, Mutunga took part in the Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship with the Atlanta Falcons. Mutunga worked with the Falcons' running backs and wide receivers and also assisted with special projects for head coach Dan Quinn. Mutunga also took part in the program with the New York Jets in 2014.Â
Prior to his arrival at Princeton, Mutunga spent three seasons at Lehigh (2014-16) as running backs coach. The Mountain Hawks possessed the No. 6 offense in the FCS during his final season on staff, as his running back again earned all-league honors.Â
Mutunga's first collegiate coaching stop came at Muhlenberg, where he worked with the team's tight ends and running backs as an offensive assistant (2012-13). The program produced 16 wins during his two-year stint, which included an 8-3 record and an invitation to the ECAC South Atlantic Bowl in 2013.Â
A standout collegiate running back, Mutunga was a four-year letterwinner and three-year starter at Gettysburg College (2006-09). He totaled 2,804 career rushing yards and earned All-Centennial Conference honors three times. Mutunga tied a Centennial Conference record with five rushing touchdowns in one game and finished his career third on the Gettysburg all-time list with 38 touchdowns.Â
A native of Bel Air, Md., Mutunga graduated from Gettysburg (2011) with bachelor's degrees in business administration and economics. He and his wife, Katie, have two sons, Jaxon and Jameson.
