Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Will Blackmon gave British soldiers a master-class in NFL skills coaching last week as he put rivalry aside and teamed up with Dallas Cowboys star Brandon Carr ahead of their November 9 clash.
Blackmon and Carr took time away from promoting their NFL International Series match to coach 20 soldiers from the Royal Logistics Corp along with 20 players from local American Football team Farnham Knights.
The 27th Transport Logistics Regiment only recently returned from deployment in Afghanistan, having played a central role in the gradual reduction of support to Operations, and the troops were delighted to get stuck in alongside Super Bowl winner Blackmon.
Blackmon and Carr took the 40 players through a range of training drills and were on hand to share their experiences after a combined 154 games played in the NFL. 29-year-old Jaguars star Blackmon was delighted to pass on some tips of the trade.
"You really do feel the love when you come to the UK and I had such a great time with the all the guys, running lines and catching balls in the sun," he said. "Everyone seemed to really enjoy taking part with myself and Brandon so we all had a fantastic day.
"It is so important to support the troops and it is actually very humbling to speak to these men who put their lives on the line in some of the most dangerous places in the world. It certainly puts playing football for a living into perspective!
"I can't wait to come back to the UK in November. It's just like playing the Super Bowl when you run out at Wembley with the atmosphere of the fans. I had fun with Brandon but come the International Series it will be down to business and we'll be both be doing our upmost to win for our teams – it's going to be a great game."
