Trevor Lawrence on Jaguars' Camp: Embracing the Grind, Progression and Competitive Edge

0808 Camp Recap Day 13

JACKSONVILLE – It's about work, progression and competition.

And while there have been days in 2024 Training Camp on which the offense hasn't looked perfect, Trevor Lawrence said that's OK. The idea is to improve over time, preserve, be ready when it matters.

Mission accomplished. So far.

"It's been a really productive training camp," he said.

Lawrence, in his fourth season as the Jaguars' starting quarterback, spoke to the media Thursday following a Day 13 practice at the Miller Electric Center. It was his first media availability since early in camp. As such, it served as something of an update on what was initially portrayed as a shaky camp for the offense.

That perception has changed in recent weeks, with Lawrence looking solid for the last 10 practices and throwing just one interception during that span.

"I think it's been a really good back and forth," he said. "As a competitor, you want to win every play, win every rep, and have a great day walking off the field as an offense feeling like you had a good day. We've definitely had some of those days, but we've also had days where the defenses punched us in the mouth a little bit.

"They've given us some tough looks, some stuff that is really going to help us."

Lawrence praised a Jaguars defense that has played fast throughout camp and that has appeared improved while implementing a four-lineman scheme under first-year coordinator Ryan Nielsen.

"It's exciting for me knowing the challenge that our defense has presented to us," Lawrence said. "It gets me excited for the regular season when we're all on the same team and knowing that that's the defense other people are going to face. That gets me excited."

Lawrence, too, said the Jaguars' offense has improved during camp in what he called some basic areas.

"The stuff I felt like we really need to improve on from last year, including myself, I do think we've taken big steps in those areas," he said. "Every day has not been perfect, not been clean necessarily, but a lot to learn from. That's what camp's about, and you want that competitive spirit, and you want to go back and forth. Guys have done a really good job of that.

"The work is really important in making it count and getting good reps and learning from them and making the corrections – especially for younger guys, but not just younger guys, guys that are newer to the system or to the team. Just getting up to speed and correcting some of the mistakes that happened early on.

"I have seen all the guys do that, including myself."

NOTABLE MOMENTS FROM JAGUARS TRAINING CAMP - DAY 13

  • Lawrence on Thursday lauded center Mitch Morse, who signed with the Jaguars as a free agent from the Buffalo Bills in March. Morse, a 10-year veteran, spent the past five seasons with the Bills and was signed to help bolster an interior offensive line that struggled at times last season in short-yardage situations. Lawrence called Morse "a stud" and "a great leader." "He's proven himself in this league," he said. "He's a great player and leads the right way. What I love about him is his attitude. He's not afraid to work. It's not just 'Debbie Downer, 10-year veteran coming in here, doesn't want to practice.' He's excited to go out there and practice. I love the way he leads the guys. He communicates. There are times where he's wanting to get some extra work on some snaps. He has been snapping millions of footballs in his career. It's little things. He just always wants to get better. He's been awesome and much needed up front as far as how he leads it."
  • Lawrence, too, praised second-year wide receiver Parker Washington's development. A sixth-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft, Washington missed eight games last season – including five games in midseason with a knee injury. "From last year to this year, such an improvement on just the way he has played," Lawrence said. "For him to have a full offseason where he's healthy, he has been in good form. It has been cool to see his transformation and how good he works. I've been really impressed. He's a slot receiver, but he's played outside. He's moved around. He can kind of do everything, and he's great after the catch, too. That's going to help us a lot. That's a guy I'd probably say that I've noticed the most, but there's a bunch of guys that are making plays."
