I know that not everybody sees things the same way, and because of that, I try to be as fair as I can possibly be when it comes to player evaluation. However, a simple Facebook post of mine that read "The clock is ticking on Tim Tebow" erupted into an 83-response argument between Tebow haters and Tebow supporters following Sunday's game. My position is clear; he is not an NFL-caliber QB.
That being said, from a fantasy standpoint, Tebow is averaging about 23 PPG in standard fantasy formats over the last four games, which ranks him right around the #10 spot at QB. I personally wouldn't want to take the risk since he is boom or bust each week, but he is doing better than guys like Matt Ryan and Ryan Fitzpatrick in that timeframe.
Winners
Carson Palmer: Palmer was able to turn back the clock and resurrect his once healthy shoulder to torch the lowly Broncos defense to the tune of 332 yards, 3 TDs and 3 INTs. He isn't going to have many games like this as the Broncos are ranked 23rd against the pass, but those of you who played him this week can take a bow.
Matt Moore: The Dolphins are 1-7 on the season, but Moore turned in a fantasy win this week with his 3 TDs and 244 yards in the air. Their offense is shaky and the defense is in the top 10 for YPG allowed, but Moore showed he could overcome all that and still put up solid fantasy stats.
Roy Helu: Helu started in place of Ryan Torain and finished with RB1 numbers for those in PPR leagues. His 105 receiving yards were impressive, but it was the 14 receptions that really stood out in my PPR league. Helu was able to add 41 yards on the ground, and although he didn't score, he still finished as the #7 ranked RB in standard PPR formats this weekend.
Willis McGahee: The true hero from the Broncos win this weekend will get some love from me, if from nobody else. "Whatcu Talk'n Bout" Willis rumbled for 163 yards on the ground and 2 TDs on Sunday, and that was enough to put him atop the fantasy RB mountain for week 9. McGahee is owned in virtually all leagues, but this is a clear sign that he can still be a productive starter in fantasy leagues while he is dinged up.
Jacoby Ford: Ford's big day was a result of Palmer's big day, so take this with a grain of salt going forward. That said, Ford still finished the game with 105 receiving yards on 5 catches and visited the end zone once. It was a big day for a guy that is on most waiver wires.
Steve Breaston: Breaston is a WR that was supposed to be on the downtick with the emergence of Jonathan Baldwin in the passing game. However, Breaston showed he isn't done just yet as he wrangled in 7 passes for 115 yards on Sunday. He didn't score, but then again, neither did the Chiefs offense.
Anthony Fasano: Fasano was on the receiving end on two of the touchdown passes Moore threw Sunday. His two TD catches were his only two catches of the day, but he added 38 yards and finished as a top TE play last weekend. He is virtually unowned and it should stay that way.
Green Bay Packers defense:Even though the score for the Packers and Chargers game resembled more of an Arena Football League game, the Packers defense still walked away this week as the top fantasy defense. Yes, they gave up 38 points, but they also recorded 3 INTs, 2 sacks and 2 defensive touchdowns when the final whistle blew. The Packers offense is what is winning games, but the defense showed it too has some talent in the ranks.
Losers
Colt McCoy: Like all of you, I too play in Yahoo.com, NFL.com and ESPN.com leagues. But the thing I learned a long time ago was never to trust their pre-ranks or projections because they often walk on the thin line of lunacy. Yahoo had McCoy projected as the #9 QB heading into week 9, and he is currently ranked as the #19 QB this season. Why would anyone think he could just into the top 10 this week, when he is on the top 20 bubble for the season? He finished this week with 146 passing yards, a TD and an INT. Stats worthy of his seasonal ranking, but not his Yahoo projection.
Tarvaris Jackson: Again I go back to Yahoo, how do these guys get their jobs? They had Jackson projected just two spots below McCoy at #11, yet he is ranked #24 in standard formats this season. His 221 passing yards and 3 INTs certainly didn't propel him into QB1 status like Yahoo predicted.
Beanie Wells: As much as the Cardinals offense fluctuates, so does Wells. In the first three games he played this season (he missed week 3), he totaled 321 yards on the ground and scored 5 times. Since then, he has played in four games and totaled 205 yards on the ground and has found the end zone just twice. This weekend he managed to run 10 times for 20 yards (14 yards came on one run) and hauled in two catches for another 13 yards. His knee is obviously limiting his ability to run for big gains, so I'd leave him on the bench unless you are forced to use him.
Dez Bryant: I feel as many Cowboys fans do when it comes to Tony Romo; he has to get it done eventually right? I thought for sure he would torch the Seahawks defense this weekend and Bryant would be on the receiving end of it all, but that didn't quite happen as planned. Bryant finished with just 4 catches for 76 yards, which isn't bad, but hardly numbers worthy of the expectations we had for him.
Pierre Garcon: I happen to be using Yahoo as I write this because I am in 25 different leagues and I can switch between teams with standard and PPR formats. So, when I see Garcon projected as the #15 WR this week, I can only scratch my head and wonder why. He's had three good games this season and those were in weeks 3, 4 and 5, and since then he hasn't finished with more than 66 yards receiving or caught a TD. This weekend he managed to rack up an amazing 22 yards receiving on 3 catches. Way to go Yahoo, way to go!
Vernon Davis: The danger in ever playing Davis is that he still has Alex Smith as his QB. The 49ers are on track to take their division and possibly get a 1st-round bye if they keep this up, but it is all due to the defense, not the offense. Davis finished the game with just 41 yards, stats hardly worth getting excited over.
Kansas City Chiefs defense: Projecting out as Yahoo's #1 defense this week, the Chiefs played a little matador defense this weekend and let the Dolphins run right past them all game long. The Chiefs didn't record a single sack, an INT, or any other stat that could possibly give fantasy owners a positive point, yet the defense gave up 31 points. In the end, anyone who played the Chiefs defense this weekend most likely saw a negative in the points column.
I really only missed on Beanie Wells, Roy Helu and Tim Tebow from last week's picks. So, that would put me right on point with my season average of 81 percent correct. I'm going to get a T-Shirt that says "World Champion of the World" to go along with the towel that I have after this season. Why you ask? Cause that's how I roll!
