JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …
Brendan from The Moral High Ground
Had the Jaguars waited to sign T-Law after Tua and Love, would the contract have been similar or did they get a bit of a discount for getting a deal done before? Surely, they have to be grinning ear to ear right now.
Any answer on a question such as this is a bit of speculation. But the nature of NFL inflation means a top player signing at any position almost always makes a bit more than the last top player at the position to sign. That means that Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence probably would have signed for a little more than Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love had Lawrence's contract been signed in August 2024 rather than May 2024. Such is the way of the modern NFL.

Three days into camp and the sky is falling because of Trevor throwing some picks, particularly in drills working on areas of weakness from last season. Next up on the 2024 Jaguars Camp Bingo Card we have: "OUR SEASON IS OVER" due to a player injury/multiple player injuries, complaints about the heat at open practices and everyone's favorite - demanding that the backup quarterback start the season because of "analysis." There are plenty of things to be concerned about. Picks in the first three days of camp are not high on the list.
I prefer not to discuss injuries until injuries occur, and the shade opportunities at the Miller Electric Center make complaining about the heat at Jaguars Training Camp these days very much complaining for complaining's sake. I suppose fans can demand whatever they want whenever they want, but Lawrence is the Jaguars' starting quarterback. He should be the starting quarterback and no one with any insight or grasp of reality on this team should entertain for a moment any thought that anything else will be the case.

Do you believe our running back depth is adequate or should we be looking at other team's cuts on August 27 to add some running back talent before the start of the season? Or too early to know yet?
The Jaguars' running backs depth is adequate.

Hi, KOAGF - Every season, training camp observations and preseason results often send fans into a panic or into a "we're gonna win the Super Bowl" mode. Often, the real season games have a different result. Is there a chill pill for fans? The panic is almost embarrassing. The training camp and preseason games are quickly forgotten about after week 1 or 2 of the regular season.
Short-term panic among NFL fans, while absolutely a "thing," is understandable and inevitable. This is particularly true in the era of real-time, 24/7, all-the-time-news with every NFL team covered ALL the time. While media in some capacity has covered the NFL on a daily basis since close to its inception, the 24/7 immediacy has created a society of "hot takes" in which judgment must be made RIGHT NOW. Never mind that RIGHT NOW happens to be following a non-padded organized team activities practice or a non-padded Day 2 of training camp – judgment still MUST be made right now. The people want – nay, demand – answers, damnit. And answers they shall receive. When those answers are that a quarterback threw an interception or two, few fans want to step back and remember that practices are forgotten in days. Or that all quarterbacks throw interceptions. Or that quarterbacks have thrown interceptions in practice since time began. They want to hear that the player that threw them "sucks" and that someone must be held accountable. The good news is that these hot takes and practices indeed are soon forgotten once the regular season approaches. The hot takes and quick-trigger reactions will start anew, but at least hot takes offered then have a touch of reality. Sometimes. Maybe.

Silly me. You're right. Mr. Weaver being the terrible businessman that he was paid Huyghue to just sit around all year and type up a contract or two throughout the offseason, specifically with whatever language Coughlin wanted even though he had 0 experience in those matters coming from Boston College. I'll go back to my corner now.
Don't be so hard on yourself. Learning from someone with knowledge of a situation doesn't make you silly. And I don't expect to know more than you do about your profession. No reason to go to the corner. You did nothing wrong.

Mr. O: So glad camp is open and I haven't seen anything on the kickers. Can you provide any insight on the competition between the two kickers and if there has been any work on the new kickoff rules. What say you, Mr. Zone?
The kickers kicked a few times in Saturday's Day 4 Training Camp practice, with rookie Cam Little converting from 57, 57 and 47 yards and missing from about 55. Veteran Riley Patterson missed off the upright from over 50. Special teams also worked extensively on the new kickoff rules in Saturday's practice.

After reading these emails, maybe they shouldn't allow fans at PRACTICE. Or at lease take away their keyboards for three days following attending a practice.
What would be the fun in that?
Big on Blake from Philly
"If they're unveilin' em, they're wearin' em." I can hear the cheese all over your face when I read that. How long did you puzzle on that gem or did it just happen?
It just came to me. I didn't even have to think about it that long. No contemplating. No belaboring. I'm that good.

Is there any cross training with wrs and defense backs # IWATJ
If by cross-training, you mean wide receivers and defensive backs practicing against one another … yes, that happens daily in NFL training camps. If you mean receivers working at defensive back or vice versa … that is rare and hardly ever happens.
DJ from Grass Valley, CA
O! I really think Larry from PA is on to something. I would go with "GET OFF OUR LAWN" in third and 4th down situations myself, but its a great idea! This could really be a thing, and a great way to celebrate the best senior writer in sports history! On Fer Larry! Go Jags!.
I am the king of all funk.

RE: Mentoring. Wasn't it Jaguars legend Torry Holt who, when asked about mentoring younger teammates, said "I'll mentor them right to the bench"?
I wasn't covering the Jaguars when Holt played here, so I can't verify whether he said that. It's absolutely a fair and true sentiment. These guys are here to play. They're competitive. Will they help teammates at times? Sure. Is it a player's responsibility to coach a teammate? Hell, no.
Don from Marshall NC
If a quarterback is not throwing interceptions in practice then he really isn't trying. Practice is your opportunity to see how much you can get away with. There is no such thing as a pick in practice or a turnover. You got a do over but that's about it. Now is the time to let it fly and Go Jaguars!
When it comes to believing in Lawrence and letting it fly, Don remains "all in."

Hey, John. I know it is early but now I am starting to get nervous about the offense. Seems like it's already a too big topic. I remember the last camps you always were impressed with the offense and Trevor. Can you make us some hope?
When fraught with worry, it's best to focus on reality. Lawrence has had a few rough practices. Hence, the worry. The reality is he has been at least good and often very good when healthy the past two seasons. Trust what you've seen in the games.
Jeremy from Gilbert, AZ
I understand everyone will say that you don't panic at this point in Training Camp and that's fair. But here's the reality, Trevor just got a fat contract extension and I don't think he has ever put together four consecutive elite quarters. He's basically an athletic Blake Bortles with a better arm at this point. And that doesn't ensure a bright future. Here's to hoping he proves all of us skeptical fans wrong this season.
You're correct that Lawrence must continue to grow and that he's not ensured of a bright future. I can't go with you saying he's basically Bortles when Lawrence in the last two seasons has put together multiple extended stretches playing at a higher level than Bortles did. But yes … this season is big for Lawrence. Absolutely and without question.

Is there a Mel Blanc on this year's squad?
Good one, Biff.
