INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Let's get to it …
JG from NYC
Has JG (great initials, btw) given any indication as to how he wants to rebuild the team? Where will his focus be this draft?
Jaguars General Manager James Gladstone touched on this a bit at his introductory press conference at the Miller Electric Center Monday – and I expect he will discuss it a bit more when he speaks at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis Tuesday morning. But Gladstone, officially hired on Friday, not unexpectedly didn't dig deep into specifics Monday – and I don't know that we'll get enough specifics Tuesday to satisfy those who want to know The Whole Plan RIGHT NOW!!! This is partly because he has yet to have the detailed, specific meetings with personnel staff and coaches that will eventually yield specific free-agent and draft targets – and it's partly because general managers/personnel types don't typically delve deep into such matters publicly, at least not until such moves become public. Gladstone on Monday talked about being able to adapt to the ever-evolving NFL landscape – and he talked about the Jaguars having more selections in the next two drafts than any other NFL team. He also said he likes some spots of the roster. That was about it Monday in the way of specifics. The Jaguars' football minds will get more specific in a hurry in the coming days. Our knowledge of this might not be that much greater until we get closer to the March 12 start of the NFL's League Year as roster moves get made and free agency begins.

I'll pull for the Jags no matter what but have to admit that I was very deflated at the end of the season. Even my nine-year-old asked me if we needed to shop for a new team. After a healthy discussion about what "bandwagon" means, we're good. Between the clean sweep, announcing Executive Vice President of Football Operations Tony Boselli, nabbing Head Coach Liam Coen, and now Gladstone … I'm feeling pumped for the season. We have our key pieces locked in on contracts and even some money to spend. I feel like Al Pacino in Godfather III: "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!" Go Jags!
There's a lot to like about the Jaguars right now. The football leadership group of Coen, Gladstone and Boselli at this early glance form a capable trio. They are committed to being aligned and all is good. It's fair for Jaguars observers who have been bludgeoned for much of the last decade and a half to perhaps take a wait-and-see approach before cartwheeling down Bay Street. But all you can do at the start of a regime is hear what's being said and study the direction. The direction in this case is positive. It feels right. Stay tuned.

So now that the coaching staff is assembled, when can the players get a playbook? Or do the offensive coordinator and new defensive coordinator already have their schemes already drawn up and ready?
Players can receive playbooks at any time. They can't meet and discuss them in any detail with coaches until the beginning of the offseason program, which for the Jaguars this year is April 7.

Outlawing the tush push right after the Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl just feels petty. If you don't like the brotherly shove, figure out how to stop it and it will go away.
You're right. Outlawing the tush push this offseason probably would be petty. Petty is about "my speed."

Hey, Zone. What are considered special projects in regards to the scouting department?
A coach or personnel official handling "special projects" is usually a young staff member in something of a "catch-all" role. The role could be about researching trends or analytics. It could be about looking ahead. Or back. Perhaps a better answer is a "special project" for the scouting department is whatever the general manager and other people in the scouting department have neither the time nor inclination to do.

"We will prioritize people and players that are intangibly rich, and by doing so, they will elevate our ecosystem by being nothing more than themselves." Huh? I am all in favor of the new GM, but James gotta dumb it down some. This ain't L.A.!
That was perhaps the money quote from Gladstone's introductory press conference Monday – and it's fair to say it needs some explaining. My best effort is that Gladstone wants players with a high level of talent/intangibles/traits the Jaguars seek – and that if you bring in good people/players, the team will benefit and thrive. Or something like that.

Am I crazy to think that the Jag's defensive line might be pretty good this year? We know the ends can play. Also I saw that Armstead is moving back inside and Maason Smith looked like he was improving pretty quickly by the end of the season.
The Jaguars' defensive line indeed has a chance to be better in 2025. Defensive ends Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker are very good players and that's a good start. Maason Smith showed good potential at tackle and Armstead returning to his previous form with a return inside would make at least a passable front line.

O-Zone. I have always believed the offensive line controls the tempo of the entire game. In your opinion with this current team at this time, grades being equal. Would GM Ozone pick O line, interior defensive line or corner in the first round. Cheers!
Defensive line by a nod over offensive line. I consider the lines far more important than corner if all else is equal.

Fast forward to 2028 when all facilities are complete. What functions are housed at MEC versus the new office building versus the stadium? I assume most everyone will not be in the stadium anymore to expand and improve game-day experiences but that's an assumption. Where is your desk? You mention certain doors are closed to you at MEC, which I agree is understandable. Where is that line drawn for you? Who can open those doors beyond the obvious of the coaching staff?
The Miller Electric Center for the most part houses the football operations – i.e., coaches, scouting, strength and conditioning, nutrition, football public relations, equipment, football technology, football video, etc. Jaguars Media also partly works from the MEC, as do I at times. Business operations for the most part currently operate from the stadium and will move to the new office building. As for me, there's not so much a line but a large brick wall separating me from anything of import. (What's a "desk?")

If Gary from St Augustine is Boselli, that meeting's not going to go well for you my, KOAF. If he's not, I expect you'll find a couch potato drunk who you must have devastated as a kid? Did you steal his girlfriend? Turn him into the basketball team water boy? You must have really traumatized this dude. Or he's Boselli…
Or both.

I love Tony Boselli and was underwhelmed by the role he was given when he was hired. It was promoted by the Jags as a monumental move for the team, but on paper his job is to select the brand of weights in the team gym and choose the charter bus company that takes the players from the stadium to the airport. If he's also making executive-level hiring decisions, then why wasn't he given a more prominent title and/or a more impactful role in the hierarchy?
This may be more misunderstanding than reality. Boselli is the Jaguars' executive vice president of football operations. Coen, Gladstone and Boselli all report to owner Shad Khan equally. Whatever's on paper, know that Boselli's role in the Jaguars currently is prominent and impactful. He wouldn't have taken the position otherwise.

Regarding potential rule changes, do you foresee the league doing anything to further discourage touchbacks (e.g. put the ball on the 35 or the 40)? All of the hand wringing last year was basically rendered pointless in Week 2, when every team decided that a (boring) touchback was still the best strategic play.
I think the league needs to do something in this vein – either moving kickoffs or moving where touchbacks are placed. I expect this to be a major offseason topic.

Now that we have the GM hired, I keep hearing the question about who would get the final say if Gladstone, Coen, and Boselli are in a deadlock. I have it on good authority that they would all need to go into a cage match with Gene Frenette. Whoever lasts the longest in the cage wins.
For everyone's sake, take longtime Florida Times-Union sports columnist and Northeast Florida cultural icon/thought leader Eugene P. "Gene" Frenette out of this. If he's in, the fight's not fair.
