O-Zone: Quick Turnaround

JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

Fred from Naples, FL

Terrible news on Anton Harrison; out for the rest of the year with a torn ACL. What is next for the Jags at this position? Do we keep Walker Little at left tackle for the rest of the year? Do we trade for a starting-caliber left tackle? Do we move Cole Van Lanen now from right tackle to left tackle? I guess my vote would be to keep Walker Little at left tackle. He has a great number of starts and would probably start somewhere on half of the NFL teams.

Jaguars left tackle Anton Harrison indeed reportedly will miss the rest of the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament sustained in a victory over the Philadelphia Eagles October 11. I expect Little – who replaced Harrison against Philadelphia and started at left tackle against the Houston Texans this past Sunday – will start at left tackle moving forward with Van Lanen at right tackle, though both have experience at the other tackle position. I will check on this, but I am relatively certain there will not be a vote on this matter. I do not expect the Jaguars to trade for a "starting-level" tackle in the coming weeks. The reason they have focused heavily on the offensive line in recent offseasons is to prepare for situations such as this.

Big O. Wondering what is the norm for good, great, All-Pro NFL cornerbacks? Understand that Jaguars wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter is a two-way anomaly and both a touchdown and interception per game are extraordinary. But one pass defensed in how many attempts? Versus how many completions and yards? Quite a few of those versus the Houston Texans this past Sunday. Love his energy and he plays much bigger and stronger than his size and is still less than 20 games experience.

There is not really a "norm for good" for cornerbacks in terms of statistics. This is at least in part because great cornerbacks often get far fewer opportunities for interceptions and pass breakups than average-to-poor cornerbacks because teams throw away from the great corners and toward pretty much anyone else. Hunter has played 13 NFL regular-season games and is playing progressively better, with two critical interceptions so far this season. I expect his interceptions and pass breakups to be progressively fewer moving forward because teams progressively will not want to risk throwing his way.

I went back and watched every Jaguars wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. target in 2024 when he was arguably a Top 5 NFL receiver as a rookie. That is not the same guy. Not sure what happened, but it is a shame to see what appears to be a quality young man implode like he seems to be doing. The 2026 Jags could use 2024 BTJ.

OK.

O, based on Jaguars defensive end Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker's contracts, the Jags pay them each around $1.5 million per game. I admit that math is not my best subject, and that you can break up their salaries in different ways. Regardless, my estimate is in the ballpark. After six games, the Jags have paid a total of $18 million for a return of 3.5 sacks combined. Though they consider it, no team pays big money for a pass rusher based on pressures. I would venture to say that the Jag backup pass rushers could have generated 3.5 sacks for a lot less money.

The Jaguars do not just pay Walker and Hines-Allen for sacks. That is not to say the Jaguars – and Walker and Hines-Allen – don't need to pressure the quarterback better overall, but their worth to the Jaguars is not just a sack-per-dollar equation. Could the Jaguars' backup pass rushers have generated the same sacks for less money so far this season? Perhaps. Would the Jaguars be 4-2 and would the defense be as good overall without Hines-Allen and Walker? That is another question.

Have there been any updates on Patrick Mekari? Whenever he is ready and able to return, do you see him entering the starting lineup, and if so, who would be start in place of?

Jaguars Head Coach Liam Coen this past Monday said guard Patrick Mekari is someone who can help from a depth standpoint following the bye. He did not give a precise timeframe on this.

Troy from Dover, PA

Have you heard anything about when defensive end B.J. Green might be able to return?

From listening to Coen discuss this Monday, this is not imminent.

Kinzie from Asheville, NC

With players and coaches enjoying their bye week, do you and Mrs. O have a yearly bye week thing you like to do? Hope she is healing up by the way.

We do not have a yearly thing. We drove to Nashville this year to see Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn. Mrs. O-Zone return from offseason knee replacement is progressing. She says thank you for checking and that doing so was "very sweet." Whether she will be available at some point this season remains to be seen. Coen didn't discuss this Monday.

While unsurprised by it, I am still really disappointed in my fellow fan brethren regarding the decision to kick the field goal to tie the game against the Texans last Sunday. Coaching can't possibly win fans over. It truly is impossible. I agreed with the decision to kick the field goal because what's the use of an awesome leg like Cam Little's if you are not going to use it when the situation calls for it? I would have relied on our defense to stop the Texans from getting 35 yards, but it just did not work. I think the far more risky play would to be going for it on fourth-and-4. If you fail there, the game is basically over. If you succeed, the game is still uncertain because they still had to score on a top-flight defense. Had the conversion failed, the uproar would be righteous fury. If it was successful, it would be shrugged off as a "no brainer." I feel for coaches who receive ire from fans. I'd ignore the heck out of them, too.

I wouldn't be too disappointed or surprised here. Fans fan. It is what they do. And the decision in question was a difficult decision. From listening to Coen discuss it the day following the game, my guess is he is reflecting, studying and replaying it to determine if it was the "right" call – as he and most coaches do with myriad in-game situations. I use quotes around "right" because there is no "right or wrong" call here, the opinions of many fans notwithstanding. This was very close to a 50-50 decision in terms of analytics – and when you brought gut feel, flow of game into the decision, it made it a tricky decision. Just because it looks less tricky in retrospect doesn't mean it was straightforward at the time.

KOAF: Some call me a pessimist. Others call me a realist, but I don't see the Jaguars improving their 4-2 record this week. With all the penalties and touchdowns that get called back I don't see any way the Jaguars pick up a win in Week 7.

Nicholas' got jokes …

Jadon from Raleigh, NC

Since it is the bye week, we should begin naming the best players in Jaguars history to wear each number, beginning with 0 and going to 99. Sounds fun.

… so does Jadon.

Nick from Virginia Beach, VA

Of course, the fans are Monday morning quarterbacking. Liam himself said the field is an offensive track. He should have paid attention to his own words. My question is that Liam still being a relatively new head coach, what can he do to improve so he doesn't get caught like that again?

Coen was not "caught." He made a decision and a choice. What can he do to improve? Assess. Evaluate. Learn from experience. (Insider tip: Coen will make decisions moving forward that "don't work" and he will make a lot that do work. I expect the ones that do work will be forgotten and those that don't work will be remembered. Some days you kill the bear, some days the bear kills you.)

Gary from St. Augustine, FL

Even during the bye week, you still suck.

Here we go.

James from Titusville, NJ

With the bye week having now arrived, I believe it is now time to ask questions regarding far more pertinent issues. How is J.P. Shadrick's statue coming along? Where will it be positioned? Outside next to the Jaguars' statue or on the 50-yard line of the playing field?

I think they built it already. I don't think it took long. Remember the Stonehenge prop in Spinal Tap? But lemme check.
