O-Zone: One good day

JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

Brad from The Avenues

Now, tell me that didn't feel good.

The Jaguars on Sunday beat the Tennessee Titans, 10-6, at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tenn. – and not only did it feel good for Jaguars players, it felt good for most Jaguars fans/observers. Most emails reflected as much anyway. And why not? While fans and media understandably focus on draft positioning and the future when seasons go awry to the extent of the Jaguars 2024 season, it's important sometimes to remember that the object of football is to win. And it's OK to put aside the big picture in a season such as this to revel in a victory, particularly when that victory comes against a longtime division rival. Yes, draft position will matter next offseason. And yes, come the offseason we may bemoan a draft position or two lost because of a "meaningless" late-season victory. But we can put off bemoaning for a short time and enjoy a pleasant victory. Absolutely, we can.

Mike from Atlanta, GA

I'm glad I turned this snoozefest off in the first quarter to watch the Atlanta Falcons versus Minnesota Vikings. Even when they win, it's awful to look at.

I feel a bit sadder now, but I suppose there's little to say to this. The Jaguars aren't very good this season, and they're sure not good enough to win "pretty" very often. That has been the case much of the season, and it sure isn't going to magically change overnight late in the season with the starting quarterback out for the season. That's how it is for now. It just is.

Nick from Virginia Beach

Always a great day to beat Tennessee! Wear teal with pride!

Damn right.

James from Socorro, NM

Not the worst anymore!

The Jaguars entered Sunday's tied for the worst record in the NFL and in line for the No. 1 overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft. They are no longer in that position.

Jacob from NY

Ugh, why do we have to win with a backup quarterback and lose higher draft picks? Jags can't do anything right. Now, they won't fire the general manager and head coach.

I don't know what Jaguars Owner Shad Khan will decide regarding General Manager Trent Baalke and Head Coach Doug Pederson following the 2024 regular season. Whatever he decides, it won't change based on one game.

Aaron from Atlanta, GA

This was awesome. Winning is always the right thing, and especially so when it happens in Nashville. I fully understand the sentiment among some fans that the Jaguars should lose games to try for a better draft pick. But those fans are wrong. For this particular team in this particular year, winning is more meaningful than improved draft selection.

Damn right.

Benjamin from Jacksonville, FL BWO Upstate SC

So, the Jaguars got the W. Good for the players, bad for the team. Sunday's win could mean the difference between trading the first overall pick to a team needing a quarterback getting more draft capital, and taking a Top 5 or 10 player versus just taking a Top 5 player. Those extra picks could help fill out both lines ... but good for the players today.

Such is the "dilemma" for any team out of any postseason in any season. Players play to win. Coaches coach to win. That's just how it is.

Bobby From Section 410 from Summerville, SC

KOAF, does the "e" in the NFL standings next to the Jags stand for effort?

It stands for eliminated.

Bobby From Section 410 from Summerville, SC

At least our Jags were the ones to put the "e" for effort next to the Titans in the standings.

We get it.

Ed from Jax by Lionel Playworld

You are the most primary of sources regarding Jaguars reporting. As the chief chronicler of Jags history, what happened to "DTWD?" Apropos for this season, no?

I don't know what "what happened to DTWD" means. Fans chant Duuval and Duval 'Til We Die when they opt to chant such things. So DTWD is still around, waiting for those who chant to chant.

Brian from Round Rock, Texas

I feel for the season-ticket holders. What a waste of money, right?

This has been a tough season for all associated with the Jaguars. What constitutes a waste of money is not my call.

Haney from Little Elm, TX

Interesting point about how quarterbacks Jared Goff, Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield got better over time. What's not stated is that they all got better over time when they went to different teams. Maybe that's what Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence will need, too.

Or maybe we'll start to see teams not give up on players so quickly.

JaxJohn from Aurora, CO

Did anyone watch the Detroit Lions offensive line against the Green Packers? I keep hearing about how bad the Jags line is and how great the Lions line is, but the Lions only averaged 3.3 yards against the Packers and were repeatedly stopped on short-yardage runs. This required the Lions to go for it on fourth down when most of their success was via passes. Maybe short yardage situations are difficult and the Jags O-Line is not as bad as everyone believes.

The Jaguars' offensive line as a group is not bad. It's fine in many areas. The individuals on the line are all fine. It's hard to argue that the line has been good enough in short-yardage situations in recent seasons.

Colin from Sanford

Hey John, one thing I haven't seen talked about with the Walker Little extension is his ability to play other positions. It seems a possibility that right guard Brandon Scherff won't return next season, if that's the case, do you think there would be a discussion about Walker Littler playing guard? It would help the Jags keep their options open moving into free agency and the draft.

I would be surprised if Little plays anywhere but offensive tackle moving forward – likely left offensive tackle.

Rob from The duuuu

Do you feel that Jaguars defensive end Arik Armstead is fully committed and doing everything possible to help the team win? I feel like his designation of designated was negotiated and that he is hoping to get paid for sacks. Could not help but notice he has a million dollars worth of sack incentives in his contract. I don't think any of the coaches believe Tyler Lacy is a better defensive tackle than Armstead, so why don't we ever get our best four that we talked about all offseason? We are stuck with him next year, he makes big money and has zero production. Now he comes out defending his friend that tried to kill our quarterback? Seems like he got paid to relax in Jax and take care of himself.

I assume Armstead is fully committed. I have no evidence to suggest otherwise. I don't know much about Armstead and his motivation beyond that.

Music City Morass

Tom's got jokes.

Jack from Southside

After watching this performance, you still don't think we'll have the No. 1 pick? Lol.

I don't expect the Jaguars to select No. 1 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. This is because I expect them to win multiple games in the final four games. I thought this before Sunday and I continue to think it.

Gary from Jax

In the first quarter who called the double reverse or whatever that play is named. Was there some kind of promotion going on where the coaches get a play from the local pee wee league get's to call in the play?

It's always, always, always, always, always, always, always, always, always, always, always, always, always, always, always, always, always, always play-calling in the NFL.

Paul from Lake City

Well, we won a game and are at least temporarily not in line for the No. 1 pick. This feels very different from last season. This feels more like 2012. There is more upside to this team than there was in 2012, but the organizational dysfunction feels similar. Coming out of the offseason, I was afraid that Baalke hadn't done enough for the offensive line, but I was somewhat optimistic about the rest of his offseason moves. Now, I'm basically as tuned out as I ever have been during a season. Until Shad Khan gives me reason to think he's making the organizational moves the Jaguars need to build a successful team, I'm having trouble caring about the rest of the games.

I get it.

Zac from Austin, Tejas

If you've got a general manager good at picking, the drop off of non-quarterback players from first to fourth is manageable. I didn't even cheer when we lost games to get Trevor Lawrence, I'm sure as hell not going to do it to pick one lineman instead of another. Beating the Titans is worth draft position every day of the week (and twice on Sundays).

Damn right.
