O-Zone: Not good

JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

Wade from Westside

0-4. The Jags played better, but the result was still the same and now Trevor has lost eight games in a row. The panic button is broken.

I suppose this is as good a place to start as any. The Jaguars lost to the Houston Texans, 24-20, at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, Sunday – a loss that left them at 0-4 one of two NFL teams remaining without a victory this season. This also means they have lost nine consecutive games with Trevor Lawrence starting at quarterback. Those two facts mean that much of this Monday O-Zone features the expected drumbeat demanding coaches and general managers be fired, quarterbacks be benched and reset buttons be pushed. While these sentiments are understandable, I expect none of these demands to be met this week or in the foreseeable future. Still, make no mistake: What's happening is a mess. It's unacceptable. I didn't expect the Jaguars to be great this season. But they should be competitive. They should be able to make a key play and win a close, competitive game. Players need to play better and make more plays at key times. Coaches need to be better and ensure players are in better position. Perhaps most notably regarding to Sunday, Lawrence must play better and hit the big plays when they're there – and multiple potential game-winning plays were absolutely there Sunday. Something has to happen that makes it not look like this. Something needs to happen for this team to win. This is getting to be too much.

Levi from Huntsville

Wow, I didn't think I'd be saying this four weeks into the season, but Trevor just is not the guy. That final drive with three minutes left, had the game in the bag, just had to do SOMETHING, but he couldn't.

Lawrence didn't play well enough Sunday. He had a few moments, but his protection held up better Sunday than it has all season. When that happens, quarterbacks need to hit the big plays downfield. Lawrence hit a nice throw to Brian Thomas Jr. to set up a touchdown in the third quarter. He had two touchdown passes. He wasn't awful. But he missed two would-be touchdown throws and he once again didn't lift the Jaguars when they needed lifting. That must be the expectation now.

Shawn from Moore County, NC

Fire everyone. Don't want to hear about moral victories. Time to start fresh. Oh, right a question. How was your day?

Not that great.

Alex from Wausau

Can we just forfeit the last 13 games? That feels way more palatable than watching them "try" to attempt football.

The Jaguars can't forfeit the last 13 games. They attempted football pretty well for the most part Sunday. But it's time for them to stop attempting football and starting winning at football.

Scott from Gilbert, AZ

Zone, why do we continue to try to run behind right guard Brandon Scherff from the one?

Because you have to keep trying.

James from Titusville, NJ

How many more times must we endure a failed fourth-down attempt before Doug learns to take points that are given? Same answer as always, "At least once more."

This references Jaguars Head Coach Doug Pederson opting to go for a first down on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line on the first play of the fourth quarter Sunday. Lawrence ran from shotgun and was stopped for no gain. Pederson after the game declined to discuss the decision, calling it a "moot point." This who is he is. He's going to be aggressive.

Tommy from Football Hell

This team can't close. Unbelievable.

No, it can't. And yeah, it kind of is.

Seth from Jacksonville

Do you see us getting to the .500 mark this year?

This is a fair question. The Jaguars must win nine of their final 13 games to finish above .500. It would be disingenuous to have watched this team and say I believe they will go 9-4 in their last 13 games and I always strive to be ingenuous.

JK from NY & Fernandina Beach, FL

John. This one hurts and effectively ends the season from a competitive standpoint. I will tell you what you already know: The failure to convert on third down is the difference between Jags being 3-1 rather than 0-4. The defense hung tough in the second Half and gave the offense enough opportunities to win the game. When a team cannot get one yard when it counts, it does not win many games in the NFL.

Absolutely right.

Zac from Austin, Tejas

Time management is a 100 percent coaching responsibility. That can't be anywhere else right?

I received multiple emails about clock management after Sunday's loss. I never had a feel during the game that this was an issue. But there are times watching the game in real time that I miss things. This may surprise those readers who believe me perfect. I rewatch the game Monday mornings. I may see it differently.

James from Socorro, NM

Bad teams find a way to lose.

This is the Jaguars' sad reality through four games. Could the Jaguars be better than 0-4? Of course. Could they conceivably be 3-1 with victories over the Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins and Texans? Absolutely. But they have lost those games because in the NFL good teams win close games. Bad teams don't and the Jaguars haven't.

Bill from Jacksonville, FL

Doug Pederson, offensive coordinator Press Taylor, Trevor Lawrence, running back Travis Etienne Jr., wide receiver Christian Kirk. This is their third year in this offense together. Why are they still trying to figure out their identity?

I don't know.

Dave from Jacksonville

"The answer in the NFL isn't always 'fire everybody.''' Stipulated. So … what is the answer? Just tell everyone to "do better?" Wow - how could that genius plan fail??

There is an entire world between "fire everybody" and "do better." Life is about the world between, not the extremes.

John from Ramsey, NJ

0-4 is not the way I was hoping my team would start this season. However, when I saw the schedule in May, I didn't expect much better. I believe the team showed grit Sunday. They took the lead and although I was disappointed they couldn't score from the 1-yard line, and gave up a drive right after that to lose the game, I still think we showed some fight and am optimistic that the season may still get better. Kirk can still catch the ball. Thomas is the real deal. Running back Tank Bigsby can run with steam. With tight end Evan Engram and our linebackers back in the lineup, do you believe we are in for just as many wins?

This email makes some valid points. If the Jaguars were 1-3 or 2-2, they would resonate a bit. But the Jaguars are a 0-4 and doing things that losing teams do to lose games. I can't in good consciousness focus on those details when that's the big picture. At least not in a Monday O-Zone. Give me a day or two. I'll be better.

Scott from Atlantic Beach, FL

Wow, the head coach ducking responsibility was truly discouraging. "It's a moot point, the game is over?!?" It was a critical decision, you clearly chose wrong and then you duck the question. Pathetic.

It was the wrong decision because it didn't work. I was disappointed Pederson didn't answer the question. That didn't seem in character.

Jon from Southampton, UK

Hey, John. Can you explain to me why the Jags always seem to snap the ball in the final seconds of the play clock? This seems like a huge advantage for the pass rush.

I can't really explain it. Coaches and players in recent weeks have attempted to explain it. I don't understand the explanations. An argument could be made I don't understand football well enough to understand them. Hell, I'll buy that.

Will from Saint Augustine, FL

I've heard you say that September is too early to discuss the draft but there's absolutely nothing else to entertain us fans at this point. I motion we begin draft conversations October 1 due to our dire circumstances.

Motion denied.

Jason from St Augustine

This game looked different. They called a pretty good game, passing the ball down the field using play action, passing shotgun formation. Some better throws by Trevor. Some nice runs and some good defense. They didn't win but they looked like a good football team

Wow. So much positivity, so little time. The Jaguars indeed did a bunch of positive things Sunday. The problem is this isn't a team that should be building. This isn't a team with an eye on the future. I don't doubt there are pieces in place that can win and improve. But it's fair for fans not to care about that on the Monday morning after a team that went 9-8 the past two seasons fell to 0-4.

Don from Marshall NC

Fire sale!

Don, quite understandably and not at all reassuringly, is no longer "all in."
