O-Zone: No kidding

JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

Nick from Milton, Canada

For those worrying about Trevor after a few practices, I remember the folks on NFL Network saying Tank Bigsby had a chance to push Travis for the starting running back position after a few preseason games last year … look how that turned out.

Your perspective is correct – and your "theory" seems to have played out at least in part during Jaguars 2024 Training Camp at the Miller Electric Center. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence and the offense indeed was sporadic through camp's first three or four days. Unsurprisingly in the current hot-take, quick-trigger sports/social media environment, panic and angst ruled the day among many Jaguars observers. Lawrence and the offense this week have been efficient and consistent, with Lawrence throwing eight touchdowns in the last two days across 11-on-11 and seven-on-seven drills. Insider's tip: I expect Lawrence will have good days and bad days hereafter during camp, and I expect the defense also to have good days and bad days. As for the Jaguars' running backs, you're correct that there was talk this time last offseason about then-rookie Tank Bigsby pushing starter Travis Etienne Jr. There's no such talk this offseason, though there's confidence in Bigsby entering training camp and the preseason. Stay tuned.

If Devin Loyd is playing middle, where's that put Foye? I guess I'm still a little confused by the setup of this scheme.

I'm sorry you're confused. Confusion can be, well, confusing. On a serious note, it's understandable that people are a bit confused by the Jaguars' defensive scheme because first-year defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen has declined to get into deep specifics. The Jaguars under Nielsen will play a four-lineman base front with multiple looks behind the four linemen. That's relatively close to a good way to start a description. I would expect them to be in a 4-2-5 a lot of the time, with Foye Oluokun and Lloyd the two linebackers. Though it's not yet "official," it appears Oluokun is likely to play the weakside linebacker position with Lloyd in the "middle." But it also seems likely that those two positions will be moving around behind the line of scrimmage enough that it will be difficult at times to discern which is the "MIKE" and which is the "WILL." Both players likely will start and play a lot, with Oluokun relaying the defense from the coaches to the rest of the players. We do seem to know that much without much question.

OMG! Our defense sucks! Seriously though... As unlikely as it is that Trevor is replaced for poor performance, it's even less likely that his replacement would be Matt Jones. He was pretty good at Arkansas but the NFL didn't work out for him. 🤣

Tom one, O-Zone zero.

Cliff from ORANGE PARK

What are the odds that Matt Jones gets traded to a quarterback-needy team before opening day? Would you make the trade for a second/third round pick?

People are just messing with me now, right?

Keith from Saint Augustine, FL

Oh no, the defense sucks!

You jest – and I love a good "jest" as much as the next guy. But you also have touched on the great annual conflict of any NFL training camps. When the defense plays well, observers figure the offense sucks. When the offense plays well, the defense sucks. The truth is more often than not somewhere in the middle. And that the senior writer sucks. And so it goes.

Brian from Carlisle, PA

O... you are so Brutal, Funny but Brutal.

I am the king of all funk.

David Lamm had a big role in the Jaguars getting an NFL team years before the city got a team. He was everywhere back then TV radio and newspapers. Got to know him playing golf and he really was a true gentleman and was fun to be around. He was not blessed with a good body, but he really got the most out of his golf game and was super competitive. He would get a back massage to play and then another after. There really needs to be a David Lamm statue or something down there to honor him. He was a legend to a lot of people in Duval. Go Jaguars!

When it comes to fondly remembering my friend and Jacksonville sports media legend David Lamm, Dom remains "all in." As most people who knew David would be.

Josh from Atlanta

Yan Ngakoue is about to be on his SEVENTH team in seven years. By NFL standards, that seems like a miserable experience (as miserable as a multimillionaire experience can be). You covered him for four years. Why do you think he's never been able to stick after here?

Ngakoue doesn't stay with teams long for the same reason he and the Jaguars had trouble reaching a long-term agreement in 2019 – because he's an effective pass rusher who isn't nearly as effective against the run. Veteran pass rushers with this skill set are often very enticing before they join a team and then less enticing after that.

J.Hooks from Orange Park

Quit jinxing the team!!! Cooper Hodges, Ventrell Miller, Christian Braswell, and now.... Dewey injured?! We can't have ANY injuries. I'm especially worried about Wingard. He's the glue.

I write about the team and its players. Mentioning these players is not jinxing them. It's football. Players get injured.

Armand from Jacksonville

I see where quarterback Nathaniel Rourke was released by the New York Giants. Could he be signed with the thought of having him on practice squad to develop?

Sure. He could. I don't have a sense that that's imminent.

Josh from Atlanta, GA

Do you know Buck Reising? I saw a hilarious video of him getting cussed at by Jeffery Simmons, who is a massive human. The hilarity to me was Reising taking it perfectly. If you haven't seen it, it's worth a 30-second watch. Anyways, all of that to say, have you ever been confronted bullishly by a player over something you wrote or said about them in the media?

I don't know Buck Reising, and the first I had heard of the Tennessee sports radio personality was following his "confrontation" this week at Tennessee Titans training camp with Titans defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons. This isn't to indicate a lack of respect for Reising; I know one or two media types in most NFL markets, but don't know close to all media types in any market outside Jacksonville. The Reising-Simmons "confrontation" was relatively tame, and they apparently discussed the matter and have moved forward. Simmons classily apologized for his role in the incident, and I doubt we'll hear much of this again. I indeed have been confronted by players and coaches over the years. It's difficult – if not impossible – to work in sports media and not have such incidents occur. People who cover the NFL are human. NFL players are human. Humans disagree. The vast majority of such disagreements eventually end in people talking and shrugging or laughing about it later. It's very much part of the business.

Do we yell got off our lawn! When their offense walks off and the punting team comes on or do we yell get off our lawn! after they punt.

Let's go Jaguars.

Brendan from The Moral High Ground

Have you covered any great quarterbacks that also happened to be incredibly bad practice players? Just asking for a friend.

I've only covered one great quarterback, Peyton Manning, and he was an outstanding practice player. For clarification's sake, Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence isn't even close to a bad practice player. If your friend still wants to know.

Keith from St. Augustine, FL

All the recent panic around T-Law and judgement of Head Coach Doug Pederson got me thinking. It seems to me being a "fan" has evolved over the years. When I was a youngster, I noticed fans supported and encouraged their team no matter what. It seemed to me that was the very definition of a fan. When a team lost a game, even badly, instead of complaining they would stand and applaud the team as they walked off the field. I would hear folks saying things like, oh well, we'll get 'em next time. Don't get me wrong, this in no way is meant to be a knock on today's fans, but it does seem many are actually more a fan of winning than they are the team. Besides, all our complaining won't a difference make, so we mind as well cheer them on.

Evolve: Develop gradually, especially from a simple to a more complex. I'm not sure that word means what you think it means.

Jesse from Texas

All joking aside, what would you say is your biggest concern regarding the Jags team this year that keeps you awake late at night?

All joking aside, concerns about the Jaguars don't keep me awake late at night.
