O-Zone: Like a prayer

JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

Bill from Bostwick

I just think that's a snarky non-answer. Information on the roster should be accurate prior to each season as a matter of correct facts. You're a journalist and should know better. The fact that Jeff Lageman is laughing at the weights listed for Jaguars players should be a clue. If you the team can post a new picture every year, they can certainly post an updated weight taken at the start of training camp. Or after. Your answer sounds like pure laziness on the part of whoever maintains the team roster on the team website. Ridiculous. I'm willing to bet Gary from St. Augustine would agree.

You're referencing the Jaguars not constantly – or even annually – updating players' heights and weights on the team website. My answer to a previous question was that NFL teams do not typically update such things, and that this is the area of the football team and not the website. This was not a snarky answer. I know this because I tried to with all my mighty might to think of a snarky answer and failed. It has nothing to do with journalism. And it is not laziness on the part of myself or anyone maintaining the team roster on the website. The people who maintain this have no control over whether teams officially reweigh or remeasure players and simply post the heights/weights on the roster. I don't anticipate this changing. If it does, great. Either way, I'll figure out some other way to be lazy. So long as it's not too much work.

Hi, KOAGF. I hear that Taylor Swift is now drawing up plays for the Kansas City Chiefs to consider. Of course, this is all we will hear about all season; when will they run a Swiftee play. My thought is it will come during a playoff game against the Jags. Do you know if the Culligan Water girl has started drawing up plays for the Jags yet? KC wouldn't have a chance.

The Jaguars will play the Miami Dolphins in the 2024 regular-season opener at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla., Sunday.

With former Jaguars reserve quarterback C.J. Beathard being waived via injury settlement, can he still use the Jags' medical staff and their facility to rehab his groin injury or is he on his own?

He's on his own.

Bradley from Sparks, NV

I would imagine the Jags are a little tired of living with the collapse narrative for the last seven or eight months and that a "brutal " early schedule might be appealing to the team?

My sense is that these sorts of "narratives" often bother followers of teams a bit more than players and coaches. In this case, the Jaguars have healthily embraced the idea that they collapsed at the end of last season because they … well, you know … collapsed. Will a brutal schedule be appealing? Let's see how they handle it.

Does anything less than a Super Bowl appearance get the Jaguars on the Thursday night opener in 2025?

Yes. No. Maybe. I don't know.

Hi, John. Under the old rules of the onside kick a ball must go 10 yards to the 45 before it is a live ball. Under the new rules how far must the ball go before it is live now that both teams line up on the receiving teams side of the 50?

Under the NFL's new "Dynamic Kickoff" rule, teams cannot attempt an onside kick until the fourth quarter and they cannot attempt one unless they are trailing. They also must declare to the official that they are attempting an onside kick. Aside from that, old onside kick rules apply unless the kick goes beyond the receiving team's 30-yard line. If that happens, it's an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the kicking team and the receiving team gets possession on the kicking team's 20-yard line.

No question. I just want to call it ahead of time. Brian Thomas Jr. burns Jalen Ramsey for a 75-yard TD on the Dolphins first defensive play.

John's quite confident ahead of the Jaguars' regular-season opener.

As we quickly approach the start of the NFL season, let's not forget about the other sporting event that is wrapping up this weekend which looks like can be pretty special for American fans. That's right, there is a guarantee that an American man plays in the U.S. Open final for potentially the first major win by an American man in over 20 years. Friday should be a fun match between Tiafoe and Fritz and I now know after the Jags game on Sunday I'll be switching over to catch the men's final. Will you be quickly writing your post-game analysis and or put a few of those articles on a slight hold as you watch the match?

Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz indeed will play in a U.S. Open men's semifinal Friday, and it's really cool to see American men's tennis moving back into prominence. I like both players, and think Fritz may have the slightest of edges. I liked how he played against Alexander Zverev Tuesday. I won't be watching Sunday. It's game day and game day takes precedence above all else. Duty calls.

Who is the starting slot cornerback for the Jaguars in the Week 1 game against Miami?

I expect Darnell Savage to play nickel in most situations.

Marc from Oceanway

Is the weekly "Rotating Captain" new this year or had I just not noticed? Either way, I'm all in.

Head Coach Doug Pederson has named a rotating captain late in the week before each game in each of his previous two seasons with the Jaguars.

Matt from Menifee, CA

Johnny O, I've been hearing a lot about our offensive line. Pete Prisco and Tony Boselli both agree this offensive line are not physical mauler types, but more "move" guys who are agile and have good feet. Why is this a bad thing? If my memory serves me right, didn't the 1990s Denver Broncos teams have one of the best run games of that generation lead by a smaller offensive line? You scheme/call plays based on personnel, right? Why can't the Jags have a successful run game with what we have?

Sure. The Jaguars can run with their current personnel. There's no law that says you have to maul your way to an effective running game in the NFL and few teams in the modern era even attempt to do so. That's all I have on this for now. I'm a little distracted by Boselli and Prisco agreeing on something.

Yo, O-Zone!!! We have some serious fire power at the wide receiver position – Christian Kirk, Gabe Davis, Brian Thomas Jr.. Being that Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey likes to attempt to shut down the "main" receiver for the opposing team. Who do you think he keys in on of the three aforementioned receivers? Ramsey can't cover them all at the same time! What says you O-Zone???

I say I have no idea who Ramsey will want to cover Sunday. I never pretended to know what was inside his head when he played here from 2016-2019 and I sure don't pretend to know now. I don't know that the Jaguars have a receiver who must be shadowed by a corner all over the field. I also know they have multiple very good receivers and that that's what you need to be successful in Pederson's offensive system.

Don from Marshall NC

Do you think Jalen Ramsey was thinking about his fans in Jacksonville when he ran off with his bad back to win a Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams? He could have been one of us, but we only keep the cool players here. It's nice to see he has matured with talking smack, though. The Dolphins have a lot of talent and they will be tough to beat if they put the time in during the offseason. I know the Jaguars did their homework and something tells me they are good. Go Jaguars!

When it comes to not thinking Jalen Ramsey is cool and at the same time respecting the Dolphins, Don remains reassuringly if a bit confusedly "all in."

So, with " ... my emotions don't rise and fall based on the outcome of Jaguars games"... I'm reminded of my wife telling me recently - with her now working from home on Sundays - that I can no longer scream agonized and/or joyful expletives when watching Jaguars games that fall on one. I'd like to think we're all friends here. If you could all pray for me to have that type of strength and discipline, it would be very much appreciated. I'm sure gonna need it.

Prayers up.
