JACKSONVILLE – This was rough. And baffling.
The Jaguars’ Week 2 18-13 loss to the Cleveland Browns in the regular-season home opener Sunday at EverBank Stadium was those things. It was disturbing and disappointing, too.
It was those things even though it was just Week 2 – and not just because the Jaguars are now 0-2 with the early-season schedule getting no easier.
No, Sunday was disturbing and disappointing because the Jaguars continued to lose in the manner in which they have lost too often during this current stretch of seven losses in eight games. They didn't make crucial plays at the end. Players didn't play big. Big moments went unmet. There was avoidable and inexcusable sloppiness.
They were also listless and lifeless early in the game. And while they played with impressive desire and scrappiness later, they did so too late in the game. And it wasn't enough.
So, now the Jaguars are 0-2 with the outside "noise" almost sure to ratchet to a roar. Sigh.
Let's get to it …

Shad might as well have thrown $275 million down the sewer. Trevor is just plain awful.
This was a common refrain Sunday – as expected because when you sign a quarterback megadeal, you're going to be mega-scrutinized. Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence really struggled early Sunday. He was better late. There were plays on which he didn't have much time and this did not seem among the offensive line's better days. Lawrence is not "plain awful." He also is not great. One thing that is absolutely true is Lawrence hasn't raised the play of those around him this season. He has not been special. He must eventually be special and he's not that yet.

Who knew that hamstrings were going to be the Jaguars undoing this year!? This team feels like it is not allowed nice things.
Jaguars tight end Evan Engram sustained a hamstring injury in pregame warmups Sunday and was ruled out before the game. It's a rare occurrence and I only recall it a few times in games I have covered in three decades. If the Jaguars struggle all season, I expect people will look at such an incident as a bad omen. Here's hoping that's not what this is.

Offense? Defense? Are they even important?
Yes.

There's something Strange going on tonight?
First, good R.E.M. reference. Second, this was the much-ballyhooed, oft-thrilling, sometimes-cool First Email of the Game. Third second-year tight end Brenton Strange indeed got an opportunity when Engram was ruled out. The thought around the Jaguars is that Strange is very capable. He showed it Sunday.

I don't think the Treverbank has any money in it.
Good one, Micah.

Something just appears "off," like we are playing too cerebral. Just looks a step slow everywhere.
I don't know how "playing too cerebral" looks. I know the Jaguars looked weirdly lifeless for a half Sunday. I know I didn't expect that in the regular-season opener a week after a difficult Week 1 loss. I expected the Jaguars to try to flex their muscles. Instead, they just sort of laid there for a two quarters and a half. Weird.

With losing come the calls for firing the coach. The coach can't make big, clutch plays at the end of games. Players must play big in the NFL. Jaguars players haven't done that yet this season. Even if it's always coaching in the NFL.

I really, REALLY wanted to believe that this time, this year, things would be different. I know it's early in the year. But what reason do fans like us have to believe this time? When are the Jags going to get it together? I hope I'm wrong, O-Man, but hope ain't a plan we can live on.
I fear I have little to offer along these lines. It's not that the Jaguars can't recover from this start. They're only 0-2 with 15 games remaining. But the Jaguars through two games haven't looked like a team getting it together. They haven't given the fans hope. They have looked like last year's Jaguars. They're the ones that must change those feelings. The fans won't listen to this writer on this one. If they ever did.

Poor execution, players appearing out of position, inability to get in and out of the huddle in the red zone, where is the accountability and how do you fix it?
Fair question.

Just how hard is it to get a play in on time? Back-to-back timeouts on the goal line. Just another sign this team isn't going anywhere. Can't do the simple things.
You're referencing a series late in the first half Sunday that played out pretty much like you said. Bad look. Those are mistakes that shouldn't happen.
Brandon from Louisville
I can't believe it. Years later, first round picks, changes of personnel and coaching, and we are still a really bad team. It's almost impressive how consistently bad we are.
I'm not impressed.
