O-Zone: Ice cream man

JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

Steve at work at the beach from Jacksonville Beach, FL

I know we're supposed to "be nice" but who's going to call the plays? All kidding aside, I kind of hope it is the head coach.

Liam Coen, who officially was named the Jaguars' head coach this past Friday, will be formally introduced in the position at an introductory press conference Monday. This event essentially marks the end of what by any definition was a whirlwind week around the Jaguars, with former General Manager Trent Baalke parting ways with the organization Wednesday and Coen hired two days later. Coen also early in the week withdrew from consideration and reconsidered later in the week, causing something of a "stir" among folks in and around the Buccaneers. That's an admittedly long-winded way of saying there will be more than a few "topics" at Monday's presser. I don't know that play-calling will be Topic No. 1, but it will be on the list.

Since the search for a general manager is underway, stop for a second and look around. You have that committed person ALREADY here in Jacksonville. None other than Tony Boselli, who knows football, knows players and would be far better to lead this team to wins than anyone inside or outside the building.

A few thoughts on your thoughts. One is that former Jaguars left tackle and Pro Football Hall of Famer Tony Boselli indeed is a capable football person and leader, and there appears a decent chance he will have an increased role with the organization moving forward. He played a key role in the search that ended with the Jaguars hiring Coen this past week. Another thought: While I don't know for sure that there's no one inside or outside the building anywhere in the world better than Boselli to lead the Jaguars, I absolutely believe him very capable of playing a leadership role in the organization – if indeed he has an opportunity to fulfill such a role. A final thought: I don't know that Boselli necessarily would be general manager, which is very much a scouting-centric role. Boselli seems from this view very suited to a bigger picture, culture-building, high-end vision role. Here's hoping.

Ozone. I like the hire. I think hiring Liam Coen has restored my faith in the Jags! Now I shall return to my seat at the stadium and not at the house watching NFL Red Zone in my man cave! I'm not going to lie. I enjoy going to the game more than staying home! But at least I went to the two preseason games that they won! Lol. I knew it was going to be a down year when Trevor Lawrence announced his wife was pregnant! You can't focus on football and being a first-time dad! Those two things don't work together! I was amazed that his daughter was an ounce smaller than me at birth! LOL! I was 10 pounds three ounces! And I have my first son on the way, so I'm all in on a future Jags fan or player some day! DUUUVAL!

Here we go, Jaguars.

Living in Tampa, I regularly heard how many believed Coen would be a head coach sooner or later. Some even called for him to replace Buccaneers Head Coach Todd Bowles next season, but he only has two years of professional coordinator experience and 2024 was his first season actually calling plays at the pro level. Do you think he has enough experience to be successful as a head coach?

It's a legitimate question. Inexperience doesn't mean Coen or any head coach can't be successful. There are plenty of first-time head coaches who have been uber-successful. It means we don't know. We shall see.

Don from Marshall, NC

Based on the Jaguars' situation, I think Owner Shad Khan did exactly as he intended to do. He let former General Manager Trent Baalke fire himself. I think he knew all along this would happen. Credit to Liam Coen for saying no. That was a huge no. Took a lot of guts to do that with so much on the line. In the end, when the timing was right and the decision was made, the only words needed were how much. Shad Kahn doesn't get bullied by how much, does he? He is and always has been a great owner committed to success. Great Job, Tony Boselli. Congratulations, Liam Coen and family. Just keep grinding we will get there! Go Jaguars!

When it comes to having a good feel for these things, and for kinda sorta summing it up, Don remains "all in."

Sorry, John. Letting Head Coach Doug Pederson go and not Trent Baalke when it's been known coaches don't want work with him was a half measure. Going into a coaching search with Trent Baalke was a half measure. Finally firing Trent Baalke because the league scoffed at working with him and the optics became impossibly bad is still a half measure. Saying otherwise is just disingenuous. We've allowed our new head coach to be cast in a devious light and for what? Trent Baalke?

Not understanding something is no reason to apologize. The Jaguars will have a new head coach and presumably a mostly new coaching staff. They will have a new general manager. There are reports – and a decent possibility – of an executive vice president or a similar organizational change. I'm not sure how much fuller a measure can get.

David from Maplewood, NJ

Is water wet? Also, unrelated any chance the team will schedule an introductory press conference some time before the draft?

The Jaguars announced the hiring of Coen on Friday. There is an introductory press conference scheduled Monday. That's not an unusual delay. It's not even really a delay.

John: I know it's always coaching in the NFL, and I hope that Coen is the right guy, but I have another perspective. I think the general manager position is just as critical – if not more critical – than the coach. Even the best coach can't win with a roster devoid in talent. We may have had some decent coaches in the past if the roster was better. Just sayin ...

We live in an age of absolutes, hot takes and either-or questions. We therefore lust to know who's MORE IMPORTANT – the general manager or head coach. The reality is the NFL is a world of interdependent factors and percentages. The general manager and head coach both matter. A general manager must oversee a staff that can identify talent that will fit with a head coach's approach. A head coach must set the proper tone and structure to allow those players to believe in the approach and thrive. I see the NFL as a place where coaches support players and put players in a position to succeed, with players deciding games FAR more than coaching. So I lean a bit toward general manager being a bit more critical. But one can't win without the other.

Kevin from Jacksonville Beach, Fl

Hey John. You keep saying "Stay tuned." Is it that you know something you can't report officially? I sense a little enthusiasm in your words.

Stay tuned.

Joe from Jacksonville

Liam Coen is who I was pulling for the whole search. Ben Johnson will probably turn out excellent, but as I told all my Jags friends he gave me Adam Gase/Josh McDaniels vibes. If you were owner, would you have gone with someone relatively inexperienced and young like Coach Coen, or would you have went there experienced proven route like Bob Saleh or Mike McCarthy?

I would have researched and kept a short list of possible candidates at all times, and when it was time to interview head coaches, I would have entered it looking for the candidate that I felt was the best leader and communicator. I would have wanted to hire that person regardless of experience or background and I would have had to hear a great reason that I shouldn't hire that person.

Howard from Homestead

Now that Baalke is gone, can we finally know if it is true that Byron Leftwich would have been hired instead of Pederson, but he refused to work with Baalke?

We do know. Leftwich has said that wasn't the case.

James from Jax

This team has good pieces. Could it be that Trevor is the reason those coaches didn't take the job? That seems more feasible. Sorry, Trevor.

I don't know that there were "coaches that didn't take the job." The Jaguars offered Coen the job and he accepted it. I never heard anything during the search process to remotely indicate that candidates didn't want to work with Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

Thomas from Jacksonville

After a bitter meal (season), we get an Ice Cream Coen for dessert. Enjoy.

Let's go, Jaguars.
