O-Zone: Fun times

JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

David from Maplewood, NJ

Can we ease off on the bouquets and accolades? The Jags beat a 1-5 team with a rookie quarterback making his second ever start? Let's check in at Thanksgiving, shall we? I'm predicting 2-9 at that point.

What bouquets? And what accolades? Seriously. The Jaguars won a game Sunday, beating the New England Patriots 32-16 at Wembley Stadium in London. You know what people did after that? They talked about the game and they analyzed it – and there was some praise for the Jaguars because they did many things necessary to win. I saw no one saying the Jaguars had saved their season, or that they are without flaws. They're 2-5 and everyone observing this team knows it. The Patriots are 1-6 – and pretty much everyone observing the Jaguars knows that, too. If you want to check back at Thanksgiving, check back at Thanksgiving. In the meantime, we have a month of games to cover and discuss. The interweb isn't going to go dark while we wait for Thanksgiving. We'll continue to analyze and discuss those games as they happen. Either way, the Jaguars won Sunday. Can people not enjoy it for a day?

Jeff from Jacksonville

What happened to Tashaun Gibson's reinstatement?

Jaguars safety Tashaun Gipson originally was scheduled to serve a six-game suspension to start the 2024 regular season. He could have been cleared to return last week, but was not. There is little more information than that because the league doesn't share information or speak with teams in these situations. The Jaguars are essentially waiting to hear from the NFL. When they hear, they will hear. And then we will know more.

David from Macclenny, FL

What happened? Don't the Jaguars know they aren't supposed to win? Winning leads to false hope that they will win again – or worse, an actual winning season.

Clever.

Richard from Orange Park, FL

First: DUUUUUUUVALLLLL!!!! Okay, now that that's out the way, I just would like to point out that running back Tank Bigsby is slowly morphing into an MJD-type running back – and boy, is it fun to watch. As far as the overall season this far, it did seem like after his fumble in Week 1, that sparked the downward spiral as a team. I think it's safe to say that Tank is apologizing to everyone with his grit and production on the field. I forgive him for that costly week 1 fumble now.

Bigsby didn't fumble in the Jaguars' Week 1 loss to the Miami Dolphins. Jaguars running back Travis Etienne Jr. did.

Steve from Williamsburg, VA

Nice to see big plays by Jags instead of the other team. And by second-year players or a rookie.

You're right. That has been cool to see all season from players such as defensive end Travon Walker (third season), Bigsby (second season) and wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. (rookie). And it's probably the most encouraging trend to an otherwise frustrating Jaguars season.

Josh from Lakewood

I'll tell ya one thing, Big O. The Jags are definitely the best of the bottom third of the league.

Maybe.

JT from Palm Coast, FL

The roar for the Parker Washington punt return TD was insane. A memory that will last a lifetime. This team still has a long way to go, but I will never be grumpy over a win. Especially after seeing it in person. Some people just like to see the world burn. People complaining need to find another sport to watch. A win is a win. Especially in the NFL

Good eye.

Dave from Jacksonville

So, when a starter says he "saw a lot of quit," he didn't really mean he "saw a lot of quit." Cool, cool. I like this "alternative reality!" In my opinion, the Jags are 5-1 and dominating the division!! Can't wait for the Alternative Reality Super Bowl this year!

Fans ask questions here in the O-Zone presumably because they don't know the answers to these questions. I answer questions here in the O-Zone because presumably I have at least a semblance of experience and knowledge regarding the NFL. If you're seeking answers that line up completely with what you believe you know, this per chance isn't the forum for you.

JAMES from St. Augustine, FL

I enjoyed your early posts. Do you think you could stay in England all season?

No.

David K from Broward County

John, they got the W! Kudos! Happy plane ride back across the pond to DUUUVAL! Kudos to the D for bouncing back from a bad first quarter. But it can't be easy, can it? Totally dominating a team physically in the fourth quarter with a 15-point lead. Against a team begging to be put away and they can't close the deal with touchdowns on two drives. Head Coach Doug Pederson/offensive coordinator Press Taylor/whoever called that fourth quarter scared, called it not to lose. Not aggressive at all. Well at least they have stuff to work on. Lol!

NFL teams don't "beg to be put away" and games are rarely easy. Even when teams are struggling, they're often a play or a drive from having a chance to win or make a game deceptively close. This is because NFL players are good. The Jaguars won by 16 points Sunday. This isn't the Southeastern Conference. Easy is rare.

Brandon from Arkansas

Sunday's game looked like a more talented NFL team outclassing another. Although both the offensive and defensive units played well, that can change against a better class of teams – as the Jaguars have coming up in the next few weeks. The offense looks set, but do you see any defensive additions possible (mainly the secondary) to help up the "class" of the defense?

Who ya got?

Westside Mike from Alexandria

Did I see defensive end Josh Hines-Allen cross the formation to cover a running back out of the backfield? Strikes me as a big ask, what do you think?

This happened on the Patriots' first touchdown Sunday. It was indeed a big ask. Sometimes an offense has the right play called for a particular defense and sometimes a defense isn't the right defense for a particular play call. That touchdown was such a play.

Realist from Nowhere

Instead of criticizing Doug's decision to go for it on fourth and short, one might direct that frustration toward the offensive line who can never seem to win in those situations.

Well…

Sam from India

John, help me. I'm so confused on the logic behind the two-point try. If we miss it, we are ahead by a touchdown and field goal. If we make it, we are up by 12 points (touchdown and more than one field goal). BUT, if we just kick the field goal we are up 11 (touchdown plus two-point and field goal). Anyways, it doesn't make sense to me. Just kick it. I don't feel like Doug gives enough thought to momentum.

The Patriots were penalized for offsides on the initial point after following wide receiver Parker Washington's 96-yard, second-quarter punt return Sunday. That gave the Jaguars the option of going for two points from the 1-yard line rather than the 2-yard line. Head Coach Doug Pederson typically goes for two rather than one in that situation.

Olivier from Quebec City

Ok, I don't really care if this had a consequence in the final score, but now it's just dumb. Up 15 in the fourth at NE 6, fourth-and-1. Take the field goal and go up three scores !!! I understand being aggressive, but there was nothing to justify this decision, nothing.

Okey doke.

Steve from Jacksonville

Why do they play not to lose rather than winning the game? I'm glad they paid a quarterback a bazillion dollars to hand the ball off. The Jaguars' coaches coach like they know their guys are fragile and will make mistakes. Let Trevor win the game. Bigsby is a stud but if we trust him more than we trust our quarterback to go win a game, we are in trouble. Why do they always do this John? Coaching/playing scared never works.

Pederson went for a first down on fourth-and-1 early in the fourth quarter Sunday. How is this playing "not to lose?" The Jaguars were dominating the line of scrimmage Sunday. Had they thrown incomplete passes and given the Patriots the ball back as time drained in the fourth quarter, I would have received a chorus of emails about the Jaguars managing the clock poorly. Because they ran a lot in that situation, they were conservative and "playing not to lose." Good plays are ones that work. Bad plays are ones that don't. Some NFL truisms are true for a reason.

G Dawg from Waycross Ga

You were right John, winning is FUN! All I have to say is I like it, I love it, I want some more of it! Can you see if they can play like this every week?

Googling this.
