O-Zone: Enough already

JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

Anita from Springfield

One fer the new Bos in town!

This was a common sentiment in the O-Zone in-box Monday, with former Jaguars left tackle and Pro Football Hall of Famer Tony Boselli being officially named by Owner Shad Khan as the franchise's new executive vice president of football operations. This is a huge story and a major development as the franchise continues to solidify and reshape its leadership team/structure. Boselli, the Jaguars' first draft selection who has been associated with the franchise for most of its existence, in his new role will report to Khan – as will new Head Coach Liam Coen and the team's next general manager. Boselli moving forward will oversee player engagement, football technology, football travel and logistics, equipment, sports performance, team security and football communications. He also will serve as liaison between football operations and the business side of the Jaguars to "ensure a unified and successful organization as a whole." We'll get more into specifics later in the O-Zone, but it's significant to note that Boselli specifically said Monday he will not "pick players" and will not "coach the team." His role is to assist Coen and the next general managersin whatever way necessary. This is an incredibly positive move for this organization. It's the right move at the right time. One fer the new "Bos" in town? Absolutely.

Bruce from Owensboro, KY

Zoney, I am so happy for Tony and the franchise. Seems to me like this sets up coach and general manager to focus on players and plays while Tony focuses on everything else and I would guess could also serve as a "tiebreaker" if a situation needed one. Golden Age of Jaguars football ahead?

I can't guarantee a "Golden Age" of Jaguars football. I do have more confidence than I have had in a long time in the leadership and direction of the football organization. This is not because of the people who have led it in the past. It's because I have great confidence in Boselli's vision and approach. I can't say it's accurate that Boselli will be a "tiebreaker" between Coen and the next general manager. I can say it's accurate that Boselli, Coen and the next general manager will work together and be aligned in a collaborative effort. The whole "aligned" and "collaborative" thing is admittedly a little "jargony," but my expectation is that will be a reality and that's a good thing.

Tony from Johns Creek, GA

O, I want the feelgood story of Tony Boselli to become the enduring feelgood story of the Jaguars moving forward.

You are not alone.

Chris from Fleming Island

OZONE, you recently said the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were denying an interview with their assistant offensive line coach for our offensive line coach position. Line coach is a promotion from assistant line coach. I thought teams couldn't block interviews for upgraded position.

The NFL considers a move from any assistant position to head coach to be a promotion and therefore unblockable. The league also considers a move from position coach to coordinator to be a promotion and therefore unblockable. It does not in this context consider a move from assistant position coach to position coach a promotion and is therefore blockable.

Jason from Suffolk, VA

Very happy for Tony! I would like some clarification, though. I thought the point of an EVP was to have one voice going to the owner regarding direction of the franchise. Now it's set up that the head coach, general manager and EVP all report directly to Shad Khan. That feels like too many cooks in the kitchen. Does Shad not trust Tony to fully run the franchise as a typical EVP would?

Structures and titles are whatever the owner decides. Khan in recent years has clearly wanted the Jaguars to be a coach-centric organization with all in the organization supporting the coach. This structure reflects as much.

Zone, I don't mean to be negative and have all the faith in the world that this team can be good or great next year but isn't all this talk about changing the culture a little tired? Gus Bradley, Tom Coughlin (second term), Urban Meyer, Doug Pederson and now Coen have all come in with their top priority to "change the culture," "create a winning culture." It is needles in my ears at this point because I have heard it too many times from too many different people. Talking about what made some other team successful and how to bring that culture to Jacksonville is an old, tired subject in my opinion. Isn't winning the only thing that can change the culture? Is Coen aware we have heard the same lines from many a failed coach in these parts? I expect the players to buy in for a new coach, but I do not want to hear the new coach talk about changing the culture ... again. Am I just being a jerk or do you think many fans share this feeling?

Head coaches have to talk about changing the culture when they join teams. But I do expect many fans are tired of introductory press conferences, offseason enthusiasm and culture talk. This is understandable. It's time to win.

Colin from Sanford

Hey, John. If center Mitch Morse or guard Brandon Scherff (or any other player for that matter) were going to retire this offseason, would we have heard about it by now?

Not necessarily, but it would probably be known by mid-March.

Cliff from Las Vegas NV

Do you at all see there being an issue with a lack clarity in chain of command in the hiring of new Exec VP of Football Operations Tony Boselli, new GM to be named soon, and new head coach Liam Coen all answering directly to Shad? Who is in charge and what ultimately will be each of their roles?

There's no lack of clarity. Liam Coen is the head coach and will set the tone and culture of the organization. The general manager will run scouting and personnel, and he and Coen will select players. Boselli essentially will oversee all support areas for football – player engagement, football technology, football travel and logistics, equipment, sports performance, team security and football communications. Those are the roles. Khan is in charge.

Terry from Cordele, GA

OK, we have changed coaches, and will be changing GMs, and now we have a new role for Tony. The Jaguars have done all this before, changed coaches, GMs, even owners. What about this time will make it different? Isn't this the definition of insanity, doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result? What has been consistent in this organization during this time? Maybe that needs to be changed?

Damned if you do and damned if you don't, I suppose.

Scott from Aruba

I was reading the recent release about Tony's duties and this one in particular caught my eye. "Football communications." Does that mean you work for Boselli or are there so many layers between you two that he doesn't know where to find you?

I do not work for – or report to – Boselli, though I look forward to covering him and working with him. He absolutely knows where to find me.

Carol from Saint Johns, FL

Wow. To Hire Tony Boselli for EVP. Perfect choice. He truly is one of us. He loves our Jaguars and will always try to do what is best for our team. I just want to make sure we find someone to fill his shoes and keep Pete Prisco with J.P. Shadrick on our Monday Jaguar radio show during the season! Thanks Shad!

One fer Boselli.

Lawrence from Blair, NE

Zone, I don't think I'm 'fan'ing when I say this, this team is about to be champions. The video where Tony announced himself, essentially, at the very end of that he has a look of such determinate conviction, I swear I've never seen it encapsulated so definitively. I'm not even a fan of Boselli as a player. I came to be a fan of the team one year too late for that. But as an announcer and former player and all those roles he's done? Yeah, there's definitely some fan hype there. But that determinative look... man... he doesn't know how to fail. It's going to happen. Come hell or high water. (if allowed to include that)

Boselli is the right person for his position. I have little doubt he will do much to help Coen shape the tone and culture of this building. He's a person of high integrity, high intelligence, high communication still, high knowledge of the Jaguars and this market and high respect in the NFL community. That's just a few of Boselli's highs. I have no idea how the Jaguars will fare while Boselli is serving as executive vice president of football operations. I do know that if they don't meet expectations, it won't be because of a lack of desire, focus or awareness of what must be done.

Mike from Atlanta, GA

Does this mean we have to keep hearing about the Bruce Smith game?

I laughed at this.
