O-Zone: Clickbait

JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

Michael from Orange Park, FL

Six turnovers in two days? What gives, Zone? And don't give me that line about how it's only the second day. This is not what we were led to believe.

I assume you're referencing the Jaguars' offense's six turnovers in the first two days of 2024 Training Camp, turnovers that have caused some teeth-gnashing and angst among observers. But if you're asking me to not point out that it's only Day 2, you make answering difficult because … well, because it's ONLY DAY 2. It's also fair to point out that the Jaguars aren't working in pads yet. They're not working full contact. Defenses are usually ahead of offenses early. I assume you don't want to hear these things because it's what typically is said anytime there is a "trend" early in a training camp. The reason these things are typically said is because they're true. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence had a couple of bad passes. In the first two days. He's working with new receivers in a practice situation. An non-padded practice situation. We're barely getting started. There will be time for panic. There will be time for real analysis. We're just not there yet. We're actually not even that close to there yet.

Brandon from Louisville, KY

It's not great reading that Trevor is throwing interceptions this season in two days. It's not his first year. The narrative can't be, "Let's give him more time." He needs to be better now.

It's Day 2 of '24 camp. Remember, too: If Lawrence had thrown six touchdown passes in the first two days, we would be panicked about the defense. Training camp practices are not games. I have long since stopped believing words will prevent overreaction. But what else is there to do here but write the truth?

Darren from Fort Worth, TX

Yo, O-man, it's 5:29 a.m. on Thursday 7/25 and there's no O-Zone. What gives? Is the streak dead?!? Okay but for real, what was your favorite moment from early in training camp?

My favorite off-field moment was when the guy who took my press-room seat on Day 1 got out of my seat, and my second favorite off-field moment was when a media guy I didn't know asked Jaguars Head Coach Doug Pederson on Day 1 if there was a Jack Lambert on this team. Of such moments are training-camp memories born. I don't know if I have a favorite on-field moment. These early camp practices are "acclimation" and "ramp-up" days for a reason. We're still getting ramped up. The time for favorite plays is yet to come.

Is it too early to ask when the Trevor Lawrence Jacksonville Iceman throwback jersey will be available at the Pro Store?

It's never too early to ask.

Please don't wear white helmets...

The Jaguars indeed unveiled their Shell White alternative helmets Thursday. This unveiling came a week after the franchise unveiled their Prowler Throwbacks, making this the Summer of Unveiling around these parts. The white helmets evidently will be worn with black jerseys Week 10 against the Minnesota Vikings. Your plea that the Jaguars not wear these helmets reflects a passion I don't share. I get emails from people all the time asking for throwback uniforms. I also get emails from people wanting alternative uniforms. This leads me to believe there are people who want throwbacks and alternative styles. If this entertains some people some of the time, that's fine. Either way, I doubt your plea will have much effect. If they're unveilin' 'em, they're wearin' 'em.

Steve from Nashville, TN

Jaguar Defensive Coordinator Ryan Nielsen made a comment at his press conference that this team will only be together for one year - meaning the player and coaching churn in the NFL year over year makes it impossible to stay static through multiple years. Fans however are typically enthusiastic about the same team and all its iterations for their entire lives. I feel the recent high profile player contract extensions and an improved, competent and accomplished coaching staff give fans some year over year continuity to rally behind that we have not seen for most of this franchise's recent existence - with all due respect to 11-year Jaguar Lineman Tyler Shatley.

OK.

Sam from Orlando, FL

Is Doug the anti Don? Doug was not all in on throwbacks. Legend has it a young, hot shot Eugene "Dandy" Frenette passed over Doug's submission for a Jaguars logo back in the crisp, autumn wind in '93.

Longtime Florida Times-Union sports columnist, Northeast Florida cultural icon and force of nature Eugene P. "Gene" Frenette indeed was the force behind the original Jaguars logo. This is not surprising. Anyone who knows Gene is aware of his uncanny fashion sense, an ability to be just ahead enough of the times to be fashionable and just in step enough to be trendy. Add it to the list of his enviable traits.

"Players don't care how much you know until they know how much you care." Did you hear that?

Nielsen said this Thursday. I heard it.

OZ! Didn't Coughlin's second tenure result in JAX making it to the AFC Championship game? Tom gets no credit for his part in that?

We live in a time of extreme narratives and hot takes. People want judgement and they want it now. You are either the GOAT or an EPIC fail. Reality is usually more nuanced, and scant few things are people are complete failures or success. Tom Coughlin's legacy with the Jaguars is best analyzed against this backdrop. He was not a complete failure. He was not an undisputed success. He led the franchise to four playoff appearances and two AFC Championship Games in his first tenure with the team, when he served as head coach and football czar. He led the franchise to an AFC Championship Game in his second tenure, when he served as executive vice president of football operations. Both tenures ended badly. Would it have been great if the tenures had ended with Lombardi Trophies and glorious rides into the sunset? Sure. But know this: A complex legacy doesn't mean Coughlin is undeserving of being in the Pride of the Jaguars. He led the most successful era in franchise history. He was integral in all three of the most successful seasons. The franchise's history can't be written without his inclusion. The Pride is currently incomplete without him and it will be fitting and overdue when he is enshrined in the Jaguars' Week 5 game against the Indianapolis Colts at EverBank Stadium.

I just got back from watching the Jags practice on Thursday and had a couple of thoughts. First, a big shout-out goes to Mac Jones who threw two fewer interceptions to Andrew Wingard than number 16. Perhaps Trevor is sleeping on his giant stack of money like Scrooge McDuck and that's interfering with his rest. Was it me, or did the offense at times look offensive? Too soon to panic?

We're two days into Jaguars 2024 Training Camp.

Bradley from Sparks, NV

I agree with Doug from Jacksonville that it's fine for the Jags to play one game in the "prowler " uniforms if only because it makes some fans "happy ". It should also be noted that nostalgia often blinds us to the aesthetically unpleasing.

So another not fer the Prowlers.

Ronnie from St. Pete, FL

With two days of training camp in the books, the defense under Ryan Nielsen is definitely showing why they'll be a huge factor going into this season. As for the offense so far, it still looks to be a work in progress. What do you see?

A team with the pads still hanging in lockers.

Jonathan from Formerly of Jax Beach

Just to add to the Coughlin and expansion conversation. Although playing by the same rules, Carolina and Jax took two completely different paths to the championship games in year 2. Carolina went big on aging free agents and big contracts and found cap hell much quicker than Jacksonville did. We did it the right way in my opinion by finding some quality free agents early but the core of those teams were draft picks with a few big signings that were home runs like Leon Searcy, Carnell Lakel, Dave Widell and John Jurkovic. Guys like Bryan Schwartz, Tom McManus were unheralded solid players along with the home runs we hit in the first two rounds seemingly every season in the beginning.

The Jaguars perhaps spent a bit more reasonably than the Panthers at first. But it's a bit difficult to say with a straight face that the Jaguars of the 1990s didn't spend their way both into the postseason and right down to the bottom of the standings.

In the O-Zone seats, instead of Moodachay we could chant Get off my lawn.

I'd click on that.
