O-Zone: All there is

WATFORD, United Kingdom – Look-ahead Wednesday, UK style.

Josh from St. Johns, FL

Fire sale?

I assume this references the Jaguars on Monday night trading defensive lineman Roy Robertson-Harris to the Seattle Seahawks for what reportedly was a sixth-round selection in the 2025 NFL Draft. Considering the Jaguars' 1-5 record – and how they're playing – it's fair to wonder if the move is the beginning of several such transactions in the coming weeks as the NFL's trade deadline approaches. My initial thought is that's not necessarily the case, and that the Robertson-Harris trade was more a specific circumstance than a trend. Robertson-Harris was closer to a rotational player than an impact player, and the trade represented an opportunity to shed a tricky contract. There also could be the element of wanting to play rookies Jordan Jefferson and Maason Smith on the interior defensive line. If the Jaguars lose a consecutive game or two more, could you see other veterans in similar situations? It wouldn't be a shock at this point.

Do you think Trevor is currently maximizing his potential as an NFL quarterback? If not, then do you think reaching the level he's currently capable of is something within his control, or do you think it's outside factors that are keeping him from playing his best football?

I think Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence has played well the last two weeks, and that he had one really tough game before that – in a loss at Houston – where missed some very makeable throws. I don't think he has reached his full potential, but I think overall continues to improve and isn't close to where he eventually can go. Specific to this past Sunday's loss to the Chicago Bears, I think he could have played a lot better had his receivers held very catchable passes. I mean, at some point …

When your team trades one of its core defensive linemen in the middle of the season for almost nothing to start stockpiling picks, you know that they realize they are giving up on the season.

When did the Jaguars trade a core defensive lineman?

Mick from Jacksonville

HI, Ozwald. Is the trade of Robertson-Harris a not-so-subtle message to shape up or you'll be shipped out? Trading a guy for a late-round future pick doesn't even help the team with a replacement. Just seems to say, "We're done with this guy."

I don't know that it's a message about shaping up or shipping out. Most midseason trades involving active players are in exchange for draft compensation. Monday's move absolutely said, "We're done with this guy."

Bryan from Tampa, FL

If this is an "attacking" defense, then I don't want one. But seriously, How are our pass rushers supposed to get to the quarterback when the defensive backfield can't cover for more than two seconds? Other than linebacker Devin Lloyd still get tricked like a rookie, Miller seems like a better fit once Foye Oluokun comes back. Any chance he takes Lloyd's spot and we see Miller and Foye middle linebacker?

The Jaguars' secondary must play a lot better and the pass rush could be a bit better, too – particularly the interior pass rush. I agree that linebacker Ventrell Miller needs to be on the field more – and time will tell if that happens and what form that takes. I didn't miss the first sentence. I admit it was sort of funny.

This team appears systematically broken. What changes would you recommend? If you would not recommend any changes, can you explain why not?

I wouldn't recommend major changes during the regular season because my experience is that major changes during seasons rarely have lasting effect. I don't know yet what changes would be appropriate after the season, though if the Jaguars play as they have played all season it would hard not to say systemic and widespread change is needed.

Yoav from Saint Johns, FL

The Jaguars are less than the sum of their parts.

Are they?

Jordan from Mandarin

We have to find the problem. We have to find who's to blame. Is it coaching? Is it the players? Is it rotations or schemes? I think where I'm landing is maybe it's just a lack of talent. Maybe this team isn't good enough. Don't get me wrong, there are good players but as a whole, not enough. I believe you talked about this in the past, but sometimes a lack of talent looks like apathy from the players but in reality, they're just not as good as the other team.

I do believe there are a lot of good players on this team. I don't necessarily believe there enough great ones or enough players who take over in big moments. That's what this feels like. And it's true that there are times when perceived apathy is more about a team just not being good enough. It's hard to say yet if that's what this is.

Bradford from Orange Park, FL

"(Tony Boselli) … the whole thing's a problem." #CORRECT

OK.

Joyce from Jacksonville

Been a while since I wrote. Hoped it was better. I see now I was dreaming once again. I will keep my tickets until the first year of the new stadium. So far have been able to sell the ticket and parking pass. After 30 years, I WILL enjoy the new stadium for at least one season. After that is up to the Jaguars. Too old to waste Sundays on the same old same old year after year.

Thank you for writing and reading, Joyce. You sound like a reasonable person and your approach is more than fair. And I'm getting old, too. Here's hoping we see better days.

Nate from Saint Johns

John, can you give me some hope for this team please?

No, the team must do that by winning Sunday. When the Jaguars play as they did Sunday against the Bears, only results can provide hope. I'm good. Really good, actually. I'm not that good.

Daniel from Johnston, IA

This isn't a bad roster but it is an expensive roster. That's what troubles me the most, we don't seem to have much room to really try to improve beyond the draft...

I don't know that I'd sweat this all that much. An argument can be made – a good one, actually – that you're not really going to improve all that much doing it beyond the draft anyway.

Jordan from Mandarin

I don't want the coach and general manager to be fired midseason because I believe it will turn the tide of this season, I want it because I want the guarantee that Jaguars Owner Shad Khan is starting fresh next year and that I have hope for the future.

Such sentiments are understandable given the 1-5 start. It's the sort of record that spawns pitchforks and firesticks at the gates. It's Khan's job as owner to make measured long-term decisions regarding leadership. He has historically done this and I expect him to do this again.

I planned to travel to Jax for three games this year in November and December. Sunday afternoon, I canceled my hotel room for all three stays and instead will take my wife away for a weekend. Not that it matters in the big scheme, but the city lost all of my tourist dollars for the foreseeable future to watch them in person, the sports bars here in Georgia have lost all of my dollars I spend to watch the game at the bar. I am just done. I will try to remember to tune next fall and see if the are as terrible then as most years. (but the wife is happy to get me back on game days).

(sure she is).

Paul from Saint Johns, FL

I read in the day after article on this free website today where Head Coach Doug Pederson said their practices are focusing on mental preparation more than physical preparation. Should he maybe work on some more physical aspects, such as catching the ball, identifying defensive gaps to hit and ways to communicate in the secondary? Perhaps six games is enough to realize that something drastically different should be considered at practice.

Identifying defensive gaps to hit and communicating in the secondary fall at least loosely into the category of "mental preparation." As for catching the football, I don't how much practicing it over and over helps in the NFL. This is professional football. Make the catch, for goodness' sake. I'm not saying it's easy. I'm saying you don't win in the NFL if you can't do difficult things.

Jeff from Viera

This team reminds me of the New York Knights from 'The Natural' movie. "Losing is a Disease" I believe this team has the talent to win now once they get out of their own way. In your experience, what would you propose to get things going in a positive direction if you were the coach?

Winning some games.
