Jaguars Focus on Winning One Game at a Time in 2024 Final Stretch

1210 Tuesday Insider

JACKSONVILLE – This was necessary and good.

And while it wasn't perfect, or what was originally envisioned, Evan Engram said what happened for the Jaguars this past weekend can – and must – matter moving forward.

All goals can't be met, but perhaps new ones can.

"You reap a good harvest if you don't give up," he said.

Engram, the Jaguars' veteran tight end and team leader, spoke to the media in the aftermath of their first significant success in a month and a half – a 10-6 come-from-behind victory over the Tennessee Titans this past Sunday, a victory that must set the tone for the final four games of a disappointing regular season.

The Jaguars snapped a five-game losing streak with the victory.

"Winning in this league is hard," Engram said. "This season has been tough. A win is a win, and we needed one badly. I'm just proud of the guys, proud of how finished and left there with the win."

Engram and other Jaguars players spoke throughout last week – and throughout recent weeks – about the need to play with pride and professionalism. Engram said he knew the Jaguars, who have lost seven games by five points or less this season, hadn't quit on the season and that quitting wouldn't happen moving forward.

"That's what's made the previous weeks so tough, not coming out with a win," he said. "I said it all last week. Obviously, this season is tough, but guys are still committing. Guys are still buying in. Guys are still coming here every single day trying to make it right.

"Sunday was a great win for us. We're going to look to continue to finish, and see what we can do in these next four."

Engram on Monday also praised quarterback Mac Jones, who on Sunday won for the first time as a Jaguars starter. He has started three of the past four games in place of Trevor Lawrence, who was placed on injured reserve last week and who is expected to miss the rest of the regular season.

The Jaguars have scored 23 points in Jones' three starts. He has no touchdowns and five interceptions in those games, and he threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes playing in relief of Lawrence in a 23-20 loss to the Houston Texans on December 1.

"Credit to him, just continuing to battle, continuing to stay in the game, overcoming adversity and overcoming bad plays, then staying composed in the good plays," Engram said. "Mac has done a great job with that these past two weeks for sure."

NOTABLE

  • Engram on Monday also praised rookie wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr., calling Thomas "definitely one of the most polished rookies I've ever been around." Thomas on Sunday had eight receptions for 86 yards, all in the second half. He had four receptions for 62 yards in the fourth quarter, including three receptions for 57 yards on the game-winning drive that ended with running back Tank Bigsby's eight-yard touchdown run. "He's very locked and focused, very mature to be a rookie in this league, especially at receiver," Engram said. "The sky's the limit for him. He's a playmaker for us. He has great releases. He runs great routes. He has a lot of really small, really good details. He's very polished for a rookie. We've seen how explosive he can be. The future's bright for him. We have to continue to keep getting the ball." Jaguars Head Coach Doug Pederson called Thomas' ceiling "it's extremely high." Added Pederson, "He still is learning the game, learning different techniques by corners, DBs, the leverage, just understanding his triangle of coverage. It's corner, safety and next inside defender, and just learning how to run off of that and run routes that way, and then just use his ability with his speed. There's still a lot that he can continue to improve. As good as he is right now, that's exciting that he can continue to get better and potentially be one of the top receivers in this league."
