JACKSONVILLE – The performance was memorable. So was the preparation.
Defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen spoke to the media Thursday as the Jaguars prepared for their annual London trip – and when he did, he lauded the performance this past Sunday of defensive end Travon Walker.
Walker registered a career-high three sacks in a 37-34 victory over the Indianapolis Colts.
"It was really impressive to watch," Nielsen said.
Nielsen, speaking as the Jaguars (1-4) prepared to play the Chicago Bears (3-2) Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London Sunday, specifically praised Walker's approach. The No. 1 overall selection in the 2022 NFL Draft, Walker also in the game forced a sack by defensive end Josh Hines-Allen and narrowly missed another sack.
"He had a really good pass-rush plan throughout," Nielsen said. "He executed and finished. When you look at the whole body of work, he played really well."
Nielsen, in his first season with the Jaguars, also on Thursday addressed the defense's performance late in the victory Sunday with the unit allowing drives of 70 and 79 yards on the Colts' final two possessions. Colts quarterback Joe Flacco completed a 45-yard pass to wide receiver Alec Pierce on the first drive and a 65-yard touchdown pass to Pierce on the second.
"I was not expecting that at all," Nielsen said. "I was expecting the deep balls, but not the result of the play. I have to do a better job, make a better call, and get off the field right there in that situation, for sure."
Added Nielsen, "It's on me. No. It's not on our players. It's on me. It's 100 percent on me."
NOTABLE
- Jaguars tight end Evan Engram practiced limited for a second consecutive day Thursday, with Head Coach Doug Pederson saying this week Engram could return Sunday after missing the past four games with a hamstring injury. Other Jaguars players practicing limited for a second consecutive Thursday: Safety Daniel Thomas (hamstring), wide receiver Gabe Davis (knee), linebacker Yasir Abdullah (neck), linebacker Devin Lloyd (knee), safety Darnell Savage (quadricep), running back Travis Etienne Jr. (shoulder) and cornerback Tyson Campbell (hamstring).
NOTABLE
- The Jaguars this week placed Campbell on the NFL’s Reserve/Injured-Designated for Return list, opening a 21-day "window" in which he can return to the active roster. The team placed the fourth-year veteran starter on injured reserve on September 12 after he sustained a hamstring injury in a Week 1 loss to the Miami Dolphins. Pederson said Campbell will travel with the team to London with a goal of playing against the Patriots in Week 7. "We're excited to be in a position to open his window," Pederson said. "It just allows him to work himself back into practice. He has been training and rehabbing, and it's different than football movements. It's a way for us as coaches too to monitor that and keep in kind of a controlled environment. We're looking forward to him getting out there with the guys and seeing where it goes here in the next couple weeks." Pederson also said the team hopes inside linebacker Foye Oluokun (foot) also will travel to London with an eye on returning Week 7 or 8. "It depends on how the rehab goes these next two weeks."
NOTABLE
- Safety Tashaun Gipson Sr. is expected to travel to London with the team, Pederson said this week. Gipson, who signed with the Jaguars as an unrestricted free agent in August, is serving a six-game season-opening suspension for performance-enhancing drugs. He can first return against the Patriots in Week 7. "That's something we have to take a look at," Pederson said. "We're Week 6 now. You're looking at Tyson potentially Week 7. You're looking at some of these guys that are injured. We have to start the conversation, and see where we're at. You never know. Week to week, injuries are going to happen. Different things are going to change periodically. We're in the process of trying to figure some of that out now."
QUOTABLE
- Offensive coordinator Press Taylor on second-year tight end Brenton Strange, who has 12 receptions for 120 yards and two touchdowns this season after catching 17 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown as a rookie: "We've always thought Brenton could be an impact player for our offense. Obviously, he's behind another very good tight end in Evan [Engram], and Evan has taken advantage of his role. That is a crowded [tight end] room in terms of we have a lot of really good players in there. We certainly expected when Brenton had more opportunity, he would be able to produce, and that has been true."
