JACKSONVILLE – He's growing fast, and improving as he does.
Jarrian Jones is an NFL rookie, but he's playing at times like a veteran – and he's showing significant improvement. He's also showing confidence with lofty goals.
Some really lofty goals.
"My goal is to be the best in the league," he said.
Jones, a cornerback and a third-round selection by the Jaguars from Florida State in the 2024 NFL Draft, joined senior writer John Oehser for this 2024 Week 14 O-Zone Podcast. He discussed multiple topics, including a dynamic and critical fourth-quarter performance in the Jaguars' 10-6 victory over the Tennessee Titans this past Sunday.
Jones, who has emerged as a promising nickel corner as a rookie, registered two pass breakups and a sack in the game – including a breakup and a sack on back-to-back plays to force a Titans punt that led to the game-winning touchdown.
"I always felt like I belonged here," Jones said, "but that game within itself just kind of lets you know, 'OK, you can be one of those ones.' I'm not in it to be any of the small stuff. My goal was never just to get to the NFL. I want to be the best to do it."
Jones also discussed his role within the Jaguars' defense. While he is a cornerback who plays nickel, he said he thinks of himself differently.
"I see myself as a piece," he said. "I'm a piece of the defense. When they create the 'X' factors for Madden, mine should just say, 'Different.' I can do anything. Those are the types of things I work on. I work on everything. I want to be the best at everything."
Jones, too, discussed his transition to the NFL. He said the game has slowed for him throughout the season and that while he never lacked confidence, he has gained it as a rookie. And while the Jaguars have struggled to a 3-10 record during his rookie season, he doesn't believe the team is destined to struggle for long.
"I went through something similar at Florida State," he said. "When I first got to Florida State, we weren't really too high. Everybody said what they had to say. Everybody switched on us. But we just kept turning and turning. We just kept going and we turned it around. I know what it feels like to be from the bottom.
"We've got something here, regardless of what anybody has to say. I know what we can be. It's on us to turn it around."
