QB Trevor Lawrence Emphasizes the Unity of the Jaguars Locker Room

0919 Trevor Recap Article - Week Three

JACKSONVILLE – What matters is what's next.

Trevor Lawrence spoke to the media Thursday, doing so with an eye on the immediate future – and on a Monday prime-time matchup.

He also has an eye on the locker room, and said he likes what he sees.

"Our team has responded great," Lawrence said. "We're together."

Trevor Lawrence, the Jaguars' fourth-year starting quarterback, on Thursday discussed a Monday matchup with one of the AFC's best teams – the four-time defending AFC East Champion Buffalo Bills. He also discussed his post-game reaction to what at times was a sloppy offensive performance in a Week 2 loss to the Cleveland Browns at EverBank Stadium this past Sunday.

Lawrence immediately following the loss said of the Jaguars' offense, “we suck right now," and said Thursday the Jaguars remain focused and unified despite two losses in two games to start the season.

"We've had some great conversations," Lawrence said. "We're tight. That's the biggest thing you can't lose and we haven't lost that at all. We have a really close team and it's important. We have a mature team that's going to respond. Whoever says something and speaks up, guys are going to respect it.

"We have a really tight locker room, so no surprise there. We know what we have to do this week. We have the right mindset."

Wide receiver Christian Kirk said response to Lawrence has been positive, adding that "You want to see that emotion because that means he cares."

"He wants us to be great and I think we all do," Kirk said. "If you're not frustrated at this point, then you don't care enough. The guys we have in this locker room, the frustration comes from a good place because we know how good of a team we can be.

"When it comes from 16 (Lawrence), I think guys rally around that."

Lawrence through two games this season has thrown for 382 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions, saying Thursday: "There are things in my game I'm doing well right now that I wanted to do well this season, and there are some other parts where I still need to work."

"There are a few things, definitely, to work on," he said. "It's the same message for myself as it is for the whole offense and our team: It's just a couple of little things, but you've got to do them, and you've got to be consistent, and those little things get you beat. That's the emphasis, it's just the details and the consistency and doing the right thing every play.

"It's not going to be perfect. There are going to be mistakes, but really putting an emphasis on those little details because they matter, and they show up in games."

Jaguars Head Coach Doug Pederson said Lawrence has done "a good job" and is "on track" through two games.

Pederson lauded Lawrence pushing the ball downfield well to rookie wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. on multiple occasions, and also said Lawrence has protected the ball well through the first two games. Lawrence does not have a turnover this season.

"We've had more backed up drives in two games than I think we've had in two years," Pederson said. "Our starting a good position has been tough so there are some challenges there, too. We've faced some certain know, situations there.

"Can he be better? Yeah, he can be better. That's all part of just continuing to grow. He doing some really good things. We just have to keep working."

NOTABLE

  • A notable early-season trend for the Jaguars this season: Wide receiver Christian Kirk, who has two receptions for 29 yards in two games. Kirk caught one pass for 30 yards in Week 1, catching one for minus-one yards in Week 2. Kirk caught 84 passes for 1,108 yards and eight touchdowns in 2022, catching 57 passes for 787 yards and three touchdowns before missing the last five games with a core muscle injury. "I've got to get him going this week," Lawrence said. "I've got a lot of trust and faith that it will get going this week. I know it's going to happen. I'm not really concerned about that. He's one of our best players and obviously, we have a lot of chemistry, and we've played a lot together. He's a guy I trust a lot. We've got to keep trusting the system and keep putting the best plan we can together. He has to be an emphasis. You've got to get him the ball and get him in a rhythm."
