Pederson Looking at All Aspects Internally for Progression Forward

0925 Doug Presser Article - Week 4

JACKSONVILLE – The urgency around the Jaguars is real.

That's as it should – and must – be after a difficult start to the season. But while that much is true, Doug Pederson said something else is just as true.

The team still believes, and hope remains strong.

"The confidence is still there," he said.

Pederson, in his third season as the Jaguars' head coach, spoke to the media Wednesday as the Jaguars (0-3) prepared for a divisional game against the AFC South-leading Houston Texans (2-1) at NRG Stadium in Houston, Tex., Sunday at 1 p.m.

"The confidence is high," Pederson added. "I do feel that. We have to just focus in on us internally as keep things nice and tight. Eliminate the mistakes that are happening and try to play your best football."

Quarterback Trevor Lawrence spoke to the media early Wednesday afternoon. He – like Pederson and Jaguars players – spoke of the team's confidence and the need to balance urgency with the proper approach.

"We still have the confidence in our group, our coaches, our team," Lawrence said. "That's not going to change and that can't change. That's when you have problems, when you lose that confidence and start pointing fingers and there's been none of that.

"So, we're staying together and that's just the message: just stick together."

Lawrence had another message for a Jaguars team that lost to the Buffalo Bills, 47-10, in a road prime-time game Monday – that this is still football, and being "too urgent" can have adverse effects. That makes the proper balance critical, even for a team that has struggled at times in multiple areas through three games.

"Just remember to have fun, too," Lawrence said. "Situations like this a lot of times make you get tight and tense. Be on your details and be locked in and we've got to prepare the right way and put everything into it during the week. But also have fun. We're playing a game, and we have an opportunity to do things that not many people get to do.

"Keep that perspective and let that relax you, let you play better. Not to say that it doesn't matter because it does, and we take a lot of pride in it. But you also do have to have the perspective. I think that helps you play better and looser because you want to go out there and fly around and not be thinking about everything and be able to go play free."

NOTABLE

  • Lawrence on Wednesday also addressed his play through three games. The fourth-year veteran has completed 47 of 89 passes for 560 yards and two touchdowns. He completed 31 of 38 passes for 178 yards and a touchdown with an interception against Buffalo. "I don't think it's been an issue of me trying to force the issue," Lawrence said. "I think that there's been a couple throws I've missed throughout the year. There have been a couple times where progression-wise, I've got a little too far ahead of myself or thought I saw something I didn't see, and I think those are majority of the mistakes. I just have to keep trusting it. That's the main thing, is keep trusting it, trust what I see, trust my progression and just get the ball to our playmakers. They're going to make plays. We have got to continue doing that and staying on schedule." The Jaguars have lost eight consecutive games with Lawrence starting dating to last season. "That's kind of surprising obviously," Pederson said. "It's something, for me, personally, you try to pinpoint exactly what it is. Is it him? Is it the team? Is it injuries, what is it? I think it's everything. I think it's a culmination of everything – something we've got to continue to work through. Obviously, head coach, quarterback, you're going to get all the criticism, and we've got to work through that together."

NOTABLE

  • Tight end Evan Engram and linebacker Foye Oluokun did not practice Wednesday. Engram has missed the last two games with a hamstring injury and Oluokun left the loss to the Bills with a foot injury. Engram on Wednesday said he is "pretty optimistic, just still taking day by day, based on how I feel." Pederson on Tuesday said "there's a chance" Oluokun won't play against the Texans. Practicing limited for the Jaguars Wednesday were running back Tank Bigsby (shoulder), safety Darnell Savage (quadricep), wide receiver Gabe Davis (shoulder), right tackle Anton Harrison (knee), cornerback Jarrian Jones (shoulder) and cornerback Montaric Brown (chest).
