Jaguars Celebrating Tom Coughlin Induction Into the Pride, Prowler Throwbacks Debut on Sunday

1002 Doug Presser Recap Article

JACKSONVILLE – The circumstances are cool – and they're important.

Doug Pederson knows it, and the Jaguars' head coach on Wednesday morning ensured that players fully understand the significance of Sunday's home game.

It's a day for history. And it matters in the present, too.

"I definitely want that out in front of the team," he said.

The Jaguars on Sunday will honor former Head Coach Tom Coughlin by inducting him into the Pride of the Jaguars at halftime of a home game against the Indianapolis Colts at EverBank Stadium. Coughlin built the expansion Jaguars into a four-time playoff team in the late 1990s, with multiple players from that era expected to attend Sunday's game.

The team also will Prowler Throwback uniforms during the game. The throwbacks are based on the team's original uniform that debuted during the 1995 expansion season.

"That will be a big deal," wide receiver Christian Kirk said. "I know everything that he (Coughlin) has done for this organization. We just want to pay homage to everybody that has paved the way for us to be here and to be able to play for this organization.

"What a better way to do it than back home in a divisional game and in those uniforms, too. It will be exciting weekend. It's great to be a part of that and pay homage to those guys."

Pederson spoke of the history aspect of the weekend at a team meeting Wednesday morning.

"I just wanted to bring it to their attention," Pederson said. "It's the history of the Jaguars, and I think it's important that they know that and that we get to celebrate Coach Coughlin and also getting some former players, some legends back this weekend to see and visit.

"It's important they see that."

Quarterback Trevor Lawrence called Coughlin "a great man" and called the Prowler Throwbacks "sweet."

"His legacy speaks for itself," Lawrence said of Coughlin. "Obviously, he didn't coach me, so I didn't get to see that part, but I have a lot of respect for what he's able to do on the field – and off it, too. It's cool to be able to wear those uniforms and put them back on and represent the city the right way on Sunday. What we have to worry about is finding a way to win the game."

NOTABLE

  • Jaguars tight end Evan Engram (hamstring) and safety Darnell Savage (quadricep) practiced limited Wednesday, with both players having missed the last three games with the injuries. Defensive end Josh Hines-Allen (concussion) and linebacker Devin Lloyd (knee) both missed practice, with Hines-Allen sustaining his injury in a loss to the Houston Texans this past Sunday and Lloyd unable to play in that game. "He'll be out there, but he'll also be with our medical team, doctors and trainers and working a little bit on the side," Pederson said of Lloyd Wednesday. Five other Jaguars players practiced limited Wednesday: Linebacker Yasir Abdullah (neck), running back Tank Bigsby (shoulder), wide receiver Gabe Davis (shoulder), running back Travis Etienne Jr. (shoulder) and cornerback Jarrian Jones (shoulder).

NOTABLE

  • The Jaguars through four games rank 27th in the NFL with seven sacks. Third-year defensive end Travon Walker has two sacks through two games, with Josh Hines-Allen registering one sack so far this season after a franchise-record 17.5 last season. Walker finished last season with 10 sacks. "That's an area that we can continue to improve," Pederson said. "I think we're close. When you really put on the film and look, we're inches away from hitting the quarterback, hitting his arm, knocking the ball loose. We've played some mobile guys here too in these first few weeks, and so that comes into play, but it's not for lack of effort. We have to continue to push pockets. This is another week. Depending on who plays, the pass rush could be a little bit different, but we're close. We know internally that we can improve and it needs to improve and we got to just continue to work."

QUOTABLE

  • Pederson: "The league's full of good players. We need our elite players to play elite. That's it. Sometimes, that's what it comes down to, are they going to be elite every week? Probably not. That means the good players have to step up and play too, but if we get enough of that and get enough guys playing that way, we'll be better off."
