JACKSONVILLE – They're making strides, and that must continue.
The Jaguars also have won more than they have lost recently, which Head Coach Doug Pederson said means hope and motivation remains strong.
"Anything's possible," Pederson said.
Pederson spoke to the media Wednesday morning as the Jaguars (2-5) prepared to play the Green Bay Packers (5-2) at EverBank Stadium Sunday, with quarterback Trevor Lawrence speaking shortly after noon. Each spoke of the need to maintain the positive energy from two victories in the last three games.
"We have some momentum, especially compared to where we were the first month of the season," Lawrence said. "I think we played our best game as a team last Sunday. I still think there's a lot more out there that we can improve on.
"We have some momentum. Let's run with that and just put together another good week and take it one at a time."
The Jaguars, after an 0-4 start, beat the Indianapolis Colts 37-34 in a Week 5 game in Jacksonville. They then lost to the Chicago Bears 35-16 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London before beating the New England Patriots 32-16 at Wembley Stadium in London this past Sunday.
"Two out of the last three have been very positive and we have to find a way to do it again against a good team," Pederson said. "I do feel like the team is coming together a little bit better. That's the thing that we have to keep coming. We have to keep building and build off of last week.
"If we find some pieces in there that we can hang our hats on, that's what you build on."
Wide receiver Christian Kirk on Wednesday said the goal this week is to learn from the loss to the Bears because "I don't feel like we carried that momentum [from the victory over the Colts] into Chicago very well."
"It's pedal to the metal," Kirk said. "You have to lean in a little more. We have to come out firing on all cylinders."
The Jaguars trail the Texans (5-2) by three games in the AFC South, with the next four games against NFC contenders: the Packers, at the Philadelphia Eagles (4-2), home against the Minnesota Vikings (5-1) and at the Detroit Lions (5-1).
"We understand the situation we're in and we put ourselves in this situation," Lawrence said. "It's tough. You have to think about it one week at a time, which can be hard. You can't think about all the ones that you didn't win and all the ones that you have to win moving forward. You really have to put all your effort and focus on the one right in front of you, which I think we've done a good job of doing that and we got to do it again this week.
"If we can string together a few of those by doing it one at a time, then we find ourselves in a position where we do have a chance and we're back on track."
The Jaguars know from recent history that a slow start – and a big deficit – does not necessarily mean the end of the season. The Jaguars trailed the Tennessee Titans by four games with seven games remaining in Pederson's first season as head coach, 2022, before winning their final five regular-season games to win the AFC South title.
"It's a one-week-at-a-time mentality," Pederson said. "You just try to go 1-0 and you just try to figure out how to win a game this week. But I think we can lean and look back on that time and say, 'Hey, we've been here before. We know what this looks like and what did we do well, then that we can apply to today?'
"There's a lot of ball ahead of us. Each week now becomes a little bit more important for us as a team."
