Jaguars Embrace 'Win Every Rep' Mentality on First Day in Full Pads | Campservations Day 7

0731 Day 7 Campservations

JACKSONVILLE – Jaguars 2024 Training Camp continued Wednesday.

It was the seventh day of the third training camp under Head Coach Doug Pederson, featuring a full-padded practice at the Miller Electric Center. Each day throughout camp, members of Jaguars Media – senior writer John Oehser, senior correspondent Brian Sexton, senior reporter/editor J.P. Shadrick and team reporter Kainani Stevens – will share an observation.

Here are Wednesday's campservations:"

Another Week 2 day, another strong day for the offense. If Week 1 of Jaguars '24 camp was defined by an aggressive defense forcing turnovers and impressing with its speed, Week 2 has been defined by the offense – and particularly starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence – playing with consistent efficiency. The fourth-year veteran has completed 42 of 52 passes across 11-and-11 and seven-on-seven drills the last three days, and he has thrown eight touchdown passes the last two days. Just as Lawrence's overhyped Week 1 "struggles" won't define his season, neither will a strong Week 2 put him among the NFL's elite. But Lawrence as camp has progressed has improved his consistency, which is what you expect – and what you want to see – from a quarterback continuing to grow and develop. "There's a constant evolution with your skill set, what you're really good at," Jaguars offensive coordinator Press Taylor said. "As far as Trevor's ownership, it's more just mastering the little details of things. Everybody's kind of on their own journey and where they are."

Wednesday was the first "dog day" of '24 camp. You could see guys struggling with the heat and humidity during the longest practice of camp so far. It was interesting to listen as the position coaches worked to keep players focused when they were gassed after drills and how they balanced getting prepared for the next period while also making sure guys got out of the heat and humidity. These are the best-conditioned athletes you can imagine. The veteran players who know what to expect were prepared physically for the rigors of camp and the rookies are still on the learning curve. Yet all of them had to dial in their focus and power through a tough day at the MEC. Head Coach Doug Pederson didn't talk to the media Wednesday, but I imagine this is exactly what he wanted to see – his team having to embrace the struggle, which is what is needed to be ready in the fourth quarter of an important game late in the season. These tough days are the days that help define your team and it's only the second week of camp.

The Jaguars worked in full pads Wednesday, and you could feel the intensity ramp up. The offensive and defensive lines at one point came together pushing and shoving during half-line drills. In another instance, exception was taken to a hard hit during 11-on-11 that seemed a couple steps late. In both moments, cooler heads prevailed, but you can tell the difference when players start popping pads for the first time. Lawrence continues to look better, including a deep pass over the middle through traffic to wide receiver Gabe Davis in 11-on-11 work. The Jaguars have a day off Thursday and get back to it Friday when they are scheduled to practice goal-line situations, including live tackling. Strap in tight, it's going to be physical.

The first day of full pads led to the longest and most competitive practice we have seen so far in training camp. The players took the "win every rep" sentiment to heart on Wednesday. I was impressed with wide receiver Parker Washington on offense making a few tough contested catches. Safety Andrew Wingard missed practice again due to a knee injury. Second-year safety Antonio Johnson has been flying around and is primed to take over a starting spot in the secondary. If I were Pederson, I would feel pleased with the overall and individual effort heading into the off day Thursday.
