JACKSONVILLE – Senior writer John Oehser examines five key plays from the Jaguars' 28-27 victory over the Baltimore Ravens in a 2022 Week 12 game at TIAA Bank Field Sunday

1. Start of a trend. The Jaguars figured to need momentum-changing plays on defense to beat the AFC North-leading Ravens. They appeared to get one early only to have it reversed. The Ravens drove quickly on their first series, with the Jaguars appearing to force a turnover when inside linebacker Foye Oluokun forced Ravens tight end Mark Andrews to fumble. Safety Rayshawn Jenkins recovered for an apparent Jaguars first down at their 30. But officials after review ruled that Jenkins was out of bounds when he recovered. A key sequence that became a trend followed when the Jaguars held the Ravens without a touchdown with Ravens kicker Justin Tucker's 27-yard field goal capping the drive for a 3-0 lead with 9:23 remaining in the first quarter. Tucker went four-of-four field goals Sunday – with three coming after Ravens drives stalled in the red zone. "Our defense really stepped up in the red zone today, did a nice job there holding them to kicks," Jaguars Head Coach Doug Pederson said. "If they score on one or two of those possessions, it could be different. But defense did a nice job down there."

2. Stuffed – and a dime. The Jaguars reversed momentum early in the second quarter with a huge defensive stop – and one of their nicest offensive plays of the season. First, Jaguars nose tackle DaVon Hamilton forced a fumble by Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson on fourth-and-one from the 50 – a fumble that Hamilton recovered at the 50. Four plays later, Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence found backup running back JaMycal Hasty deep down the right sideline for a 28-yard touchdown – a perfect throw and catch that gave the Jaguars a 7-6 lead with 9:57 remaining in the second quarter. "Trevor today was lights out," Pederson said. The Ravens had outgained the Jaguars 138-30 before that possession.

3. Fuuuumble – and finally, a touchdown. The Jaguars committed just one turnover Sunday – but it was one that led to the Ravens' first touchdown. The Ravens led 12-10 late in the third quarter when Lawrence on third-and-nine from the Jaguars 28 scrambled right and fumbled when hit from behind by outside linebacker Tyus Bowser. Cornerback Marcus Peters recovered for the Ravens at the Jaguars 25. Ravens running back Gus Edwards' one-yard run capped a seven-play possession on the ensuing drive for a 19-10 Baltimore lead with 13:07 remaining.

4. Fumble – and a field goal. The Jaguars didn't quit after Edwards' one-yard touchdown, with Lawrence completing seven of nine passes for 77 yards on the ensuing drive and pulling the Jaguars to within 19-17 with a one-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jamal Agnew. Edwards on the first play of the ensuing drive was hit by Jaguars safety Andrew Wingard after a four-yard run, a hit that forced a fumble that cornerback Tyson Campbell recovered to give the Jaguars a first down at the Ravens 16. Kicker Riley Patterson's 29-yard field goal four plays later gave the Jaguars a 20-19 lead with 4:19 remaining. "There's no panic with these guys," Pederson said. "They believe in themselves."

5. A drive – and touchdown. After the Ravens retook the lead 27-20 with 2:02 remaining, the Jaguars drove 75 yards on 10 plays – a possession that featured multiple big plays. First, Lawrence converted third-and-21 from the Jaguars 14 with a 16-yard pass to wide receiver Christian Kirk and a 10-yard pass under pressure to wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr. Lawrence then found Kirk for 17 yards on second-and-10 from the Jaguars 40. Lawrence then converted third-and-six from the Ravens 39 with a 29-yard pass to wide receiver Zay Jones. Finally, he passed 10 yards to Marvin Jones Jr. for a touchdown with :14 remaining over cornerback Marcus Peters, a play that officials reviewed to make sure Jones was in bounds. Officials ruled that Jones indeed got one shin down in bounds, a play confirmed by review. "Hats off to the guys with the skinny legs," Jones said with a smile. "We all have a lot of trust in each other to make those type of plays. When it's a big moment, you have to make it happen." Jones was asked if he had been concerned replay might reverse the call. "No, I wasn't," he said. "I tried to slam my leg down and it was in. I was pretty confident the whole way."

5a.Going for two. The Jaguars still trailed 27-26 following Marvin Jones Jr.'s 10-yard reception, with the game-winning points coming when Lawrence completed a quick out route to Zay Jones on the two-point conversion. Pederson said later he planned to go for two and was convinced following the touchdown when players unanimously wanted to go for the victory. Lawrence said there was discussion while officials reviewed the touchdown about not only what play to run for the possible two-point conversion but what play to run from the 10-yard line had officials overruled the touchdown. "They said we got it, and [Pederson] looked at me and said, 'We're going for two,''' Lawrence said. "I wasn't sure before what we were going to do. We've been in that situation a lot and haven't gotten it done. For him to keep trusting us and keep trusting me and our offense, it was big for us."
