WATFORD, United Kingdom – They're still working. They're still preparing.
As the Jaguars enter the second of two consecutive games in London, it's perhaps just as true that they are still seeking. And if what they are seeking is an identity as a team, Head Coach Doug Pederson offered a foundation Wednesday.
It's basic stuff, and important stuff.
"It comes through in wins and losses," he said.
Pederson, speaking as the Jaguars (1-5) prepared to play the New England Patriots (1-5) at Wembley Stadium in London Sunday, discussed three areas as ideally forming the team's identity. Those areas:
- Being a smart team. "Football's football," he said. "You're going to get beat from time to time, but don't beat yourself. Be a smarter football team. Being a smarter football team really makes a difference in the success you have on the field."
- Being mentally and physically tough. "It's mental grind," he said. "It takes a mental toughness to play in the National Football League each week. These players go through a lot. They put their bodies through a lot and they're sore. They're hurting, so from the standpoint of being a physical on-on-the-field football team."
- Being well-conditioned. "This is not really related to Xs and Os as much as it is just your physical body," Pederson said. "Just stay in the weight room, stay up on your conditioning, don't let your weight get out of hand … things of that nature."
Jaguars right tackle Anton Harrison said finding an identity remains a process through six games, with the Jaguars having lost three times by five or fewer points and twice by 19 or more points after finishing 9-8 the past two seasons.
"We're still working on it every day," Harrison said. "Especially as an offensive line and an offense, we're still working on identity to just be dominant every play. As an offensive line, we want to be the leaders of the field on offense and be dominant."
Pederson said while finding a clear identity in a high-profile professional spot can be difficult, the concept at its core remains about basics.
"Internally, we talk about our own identity," he said. "But I think on the outside, the public – through the media – shapes and forms who they think our identity is. Both sides of it can shape an identity.
"But for me right now, where this team is, if we go out and play well and do what we're asked to do –if we can work on that and build on that – we can begin creating internally our own identity as we approach each game moving forward."
NOTABLE MOMENTS OF WEDNESDAY, WEEK 7 PRACTICE
- Cornerback Tyson Campbell practiced limited Wednesday and could play against the Patriots Sunday, Pederson said. The fourth-year veteran has missed the last five games with a hamstring injury sustained in a Week 1 loss to the Miami Dolphins – and the team opened his 21-day window to return from injured reserve last week. "We're going to look at some things this week," Pederson said. "We'll see how he does in practice and make a decision later in the week. That changes some things and just adds another body, another really good corner that can just help us." Pederson added, "I don't want to get into a whole lot of specifics when it comes to personnel because I don't want to tip our hand on things, but it gives us some more flexibility to move some guys around and see where they can play."
- Also practicing limited for the Jaguars Wednesday: Defensive lineman Arik Armstead (shoulder), wide receiver Gabe Davis (knee), running back Travis Etienne Jr. (hamstring) and tight end Evan Engram (hamstring). Harrison (knee) practiced full.
- Pederson on the Jaguars trading defensive lineman Roy Robertson-Harris to the Seattle Seahawks on Monday for what was reported as a 2026 sixth-round draft selection: "I appreciate everything Roy has done for me and this team for the last three years that I've been here. We were heavy at defensive tackle and the opportunity presented itself. This time of year, team needs around the league and injuries play a big part of things. It was an opportunity for him and for us to get something for it. He has been a big part of that defense. He's been a big part of that defense. I wish him well, but it's good for him." Pederson said he doesn't expect multiple trades involving veteran players in the coming weeks. "You're always open to conversations and phone calls, but I don't anticipate anything like that," he said.
QUOTABLE MOMENTS FROM WEEK 7 MEDIA AVAILABILITY
- Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence: "We have to just find a way to win this game this week because we have to we have to get some momentum going in the right direction. We can't let this this keep going in in the wrong direction and keep losing. The season is moving quickly. We need to win some games to get ourselves back in position. We understand what we have to do, but you can't jump ahead, and we have to just try to take care of business this week."
