JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

John, I want nothing more than for my Jags to play meaningful football past October, but why are we projecting seven-to-nine wins? From the couch, I don't feel like we got much better this offseason. Obviously adding rookie wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter is great long term. But he's a rookie this year, so we can't expect too much. We lost two solid contributors in tight end Evan Engram and wide receiver Christian Kirk, signed a couple of backups and late-end picks along the offensive line and did nothing significant on defense. I guess I'm just pessimistic, but I just don't see why people are expecting improvement.
Pessimism for Jaguars followers and fans is understandable; offseason hope and optimism in these parts too often have devolved disastrously into in-season disappointment and end-of-season regime change. And while projecting seven-to-nine victories for the Jaguars in 2025 indeed may be optimistic, there are multiple real reasons the Jaguars could reach that number. One is that the team wasn't all that far from eight or nine victories last season. Another is that that while many fans bemoan the loss of Kirk and Engram, the reality is injuries – and perhaps age – kept them from being significant factors last season; the real impact of their loss from this view likely won't be as great as the perceived impact. I suppose the main reason the Jaguars could reach seven-to-nine victories in 2025 is the change in culture. Belief, focus and singleness in direction means a lot in the NFL. That seemed to be lost somewhere after the Jaguars' 8-3 start in 2023 and the franchise under the last regime never quite got it back – either late in the 2023 season or in 2024. If this group captures that energy and belief, it can change a lot. Also: If the offensive line blocks just a bit more consistently in the run game, and the receivers use their speed to break a few more explosive plays, a few close losses can turn into victories. That can turn 4-13 into 9-8 very quickly. Stay tuned.

I know how much you "love" OTAs and minicamps, but now that we're through Week 1 is there anything you want to see in Week 2?
First, a clarification: While I personally don't love covering organized team activities, that's primarily because too many fans and observers feel compelled to analyze them as competitive games rather than practice and learning opportunities – and they indeed are important to players and coaches. Particularly for rookies and particularly when there is a new coaching staff implementing new offensive and/or defensive systems. As for what the Jaguars want to see in the final two weeks of OTAs and the ensuing week's minicamp … it's pretty much what teams want to see from any unpadded work: Improvement, fewer mistakes as the weeks continue, speed and explosiveness at the skill positions – and no injuries. Absolutely no injuries.

My goodness. Orange Park must be giving out angry pills. Who in their right mind gets so uppity over offensive line Coachspeak? Let the new guys call them what they want. The line as a whole seems to be improved. Time will tell. But for now, why can't we let the best five win those jobs without criticizing the leaders over a very real competition. Chill folks. Chill.
People can be a "whole thing."

O, speculation time. I believe the Jags will be competitive in all their games this season, and – here's a prediction – win all of their home games! Crazy??
It's always a liiiiitle risky to predict an NFL team will be competitive in all 17 regular season games. Even Super Bowl-winning teams often have a game or two that just gets away. And it's very hard in the NFL to win all home games – even if a team is really, really good. I would say the Jaguars will be competitive in all but a game or two in 2025, and I expect them to win more games than they lose at home. This is because I think they will be better than they were in 2024, but I don't expect them to be great yet.

So if/when former Jaguars wide receiver Keenan McCardell makes the Pride, will he be informed of where to find you?
I would be stunned and disappointed if McCardell doesn't make the Pride of the Jaguars; to my thinking, this is more than a matter of when than if. And when that happens, no informing will be needed. McCardell absolutely knows where to find me.

Perhaps the most surprising Baker Mayfield stat from his year with Head Coach Liam Coen as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offensive coordinator was his 400 rushing yards where before his best year was 168 yards. It is very strange for a quarterback to become a run threat (even occasionally) for the first time in his seventh or eighth year. The Trevor Lawrence equivalent would be 800 yards or more. Do you see Lawrence rushing more, less or about the same under Coen?
I expect Lawrence will run about the same in 2025 as he has in past seasons, because Lawrence typically has run mostly when forced to run – and I don't expect Coen to call an overwhelming number of "designed" runs for Lawrence. My hope is that Lawrence runs less because the less a quarterback runs, the better.

Panthers are taking it again, I guess.
My Scooby sense – and not my Scobee sense – tells me you believe the Florida Panthers will win a second consecutive Stanley Cup this year. They indeed have been surprisingly dominant in the Eastern Conference finals against Carolina. While I know enough about hockey to know I don't know much about hockey, I remain impressed with the Edmonton Oilers because I do know enough to know Connor McDavid is really fast and really good. I'm still going Oilers, which probably isn't good for the Oilers.

Do you believe our quarterback room is set? If Trevor goes down early we are a top ten draft team.
The Jaguars' quarterback room currently is as follows: Starter Trevor Lawrence, backup Nick Mullens, rookie free-agent Seth Henigan and veteran John Wolford. Lawrence is obviously the "guy." Mullens has experience in the Jaguars' offensive system, having played for the Minnesota Vikings under Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski. Henigan was a productive college player at the University of Memphis. Barring injury, I don't expect major changes. If the Jaguars thought that room wasn't good enough, the time to address that was early in the offseason. Are the Jaguars in trouble if Lawrence gets injured? Sure, just as pretty much every NFL team is in trouble if their starting quarterback gets injured.

Does Chas Muna have a chance of making the final 53 and is he a four-core player?
Jaguars linebacker Chad Muma – a.k.a., "Chas Muna" – has a chance to make the 53-player roster in 2025, though he will face significant competition. He played about 70 percent of special teams snaps last season and has been a key part of those units previously.

Do you have a copy and paste set up for the list of Jaguars' signings or do you have it memorized? How concerned should I be that the center wasn't even a starter last year? What about an eerie similarity between the wide receiver we signed and the one we let go at great expense? (Other than speed.)
A few thoughts (or questions) on your thoughts. One, I kind of sort of have the signings memorized, and what's copy and paste? I don't know how to tell people how much to be concerned about something, but the Jaguars like center Robert Hainsey and believe he played at a high level in his opportunities with the Buccaneers last season – and they believe he can be a capable starter. I don't know that there's much of a similarity between wide receiver Dyami Brown – who the Jaguars signed this offseason – and wide receiver Gabe Davis, who they released earlier this month at significant salary-cap expense. I do know the Jaguars like Brown and believe he's ready to build on a productive finish to his 2024 season. (And his speed appears likely to be a real strength).

O, KOAF ... If you ever get stressed out by all the questions especially when we fans are fanning on Game Day, I suggest you take some time and enjoy a brief time underwater in an outdoor pool while it's raining. It sounds like being in a bowl of Rice Krispies snapping, crackling and popping and can be very relaxing! At the very least it will drown out the chatter from us fans briefly.
I am the king of all funk.
