Coen on Jaguars Growth Before 2025 Season Opener: "There is confidence…"

2025 GAME ARTICLE THUMBNAIL

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars on Wednesday practiced at the Miller Electric Center.

The Jaguars will open the 2025 regular season against the Carolina Panthers at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville Sunday. A look at Wednesday around the Jaguars – with Head Coach Liam Coen speaking to the media before practice and quarterback Trevor Lawrence among multiple players speaking following practice:

Lawrence on Sunday will begin his fifth season as the Jaguars' starting quarterback, playing for his third full-time NFL head coach in his third offense. Whatever the numbers, Lawrence said Week 1 excitement never wanes.

"There's really nothing like it," he said. "It's the first one that counts. It does have a different feel to it. All offseason sort of builds up to it. We have to just go play. In the first game, there's a little 'Who's going to do what?'

"You have to adjust to it, but it's going to be fun."

The Jaguars lost their regular-season opener to the Miami Dolphins last season, starting the season 0-4 before a 4-13 finish that led to an offseason of change around the organization. They are 4-6 in their last 10 regular-season openers and 15-15 all-time in Week 1.

"Every game matters so much," Lawrence said. "Everyone says they take it one week at a time but [Week 1] does matter. If you start 1-0, it's a lot better than starting 0-1. It gets you going. It's a win under your belt. It kicks the season off the right way.

"You get later in the season and you're trying to make the playoffs, wherever you are in the season you always think about, 'What if we had just one that one early?' You have to win those games."

Lawrence, asked Wednesday about the team's projected identity, he said the Jaguars will pride themselves on being "a tough, physical team."

"I think situationally we're going to be smart – and a detail-oriented group," Lawrence said. "I feel everyone is on the same page about who we want to be and who we are becoming. You're not really tested until the season and adversity hits.

"I have a good feeling about how we're going to respond, but you have to see it." …

The Jaguars enter Sunday with many firsts and therefore many unknowns. But there's unquestionably much belief in the building, too.

"There is confidence," Coen said.

Coen, who will coach is his first game as a head coach Sunday, reiterated a theme he emphasized throughout training camp and preseason – that eliminating avoidable penalties and mistakes will be critical early.

"When we've executed in three phases the way we'd like to execute every play, it can look darn good," Coen said. "If we shoot ourselves in the foot or have pre-snap penalties, don't take care of the football or whatever it is, it's going to be a tough day.

"Those things are hard to overcome. We've talked about this from day one: Before we can really focus on and beat another opponent, we have got to stop beating ourselves and that's something that ultimately can creep in. We're trying to stay in the positive growth mindset and 'Okay, how do we handle the next play?''

Coen on Wednesday discussed the possibility of having all four running backs – Travis Etienne Jr., Tank Bigsby, rookie Bhayshul Tuten and rookie LeQuint Allen Jr. – active on Sunday.

"You can," Coen said.

NFL teams often have three running backs on the game-day roster. Bigsby and Etienne are listed as co-starters on the Week 1 unofficial depth chart, with Tuten showing impressive speed and power in the preseason and Allen excelling in third-down situations and in pass protection.

Coen said it's possible to have four backs active, noting that some must contribute on special teams for that to happen.

"That's the big part of it, the special teams availability and dependability," Coen said. "Does that mean we're going to rotate four backs getting carries? I can't say that. That's the kind of challenge we're working through right now, getting through some of that stuff. It's definitely doable. It's just is that the best thing for the team." …

The Jaguars issued their first injury report of the season Wednesday, with rookie offensive lineman Wyatt Milum listed as not practicing with a knee injury, veteran offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen listed as practicing limited with a shoulder injury and veteran cornerback Montaric Brown listed as not practicing with an ankle injury.
