Spencer Whipple on Trevor Lawrence: Growth, Leadership, and a Strong Offseason

0620 Spenser Whipple Story

JACKSONVILLE – The progress was as real as it was impressive.

Jaguars quarterbacks coach Spencer Whipple spent the 2025 offseason program working with quarterback Trevor Lawrence for the first time. As that program recently neared its end, Whipple made this much clear:

The work was good, productive and important.

"It has been a pleasure to work with him," Whipple said.

Whipple late in the '25 offseason program discussed Lawrence's offseason, a period in which the fifth-year veteran focused not only on learning Head Coach Liam Coen's offense but on learning the footwork necessary to flourish in the system.

"I think his footwork has dramatically improved," Coen said. "I think he has taken a step in that area as well as just the overall operation. That's what I've really looked for."

Whipple agreed, and spoke of a quarterback who grew in multiple areas in his first months working with a new coaching staff.

"It has been fun to watch him take on the footwork we've talked about in terms of implementing the offensive system," Whipple said. "He's grasped onto it and kind of run with it. Now you see the command on the offense up at the line of scrimmage. Any checks, audibles he has, you can see that come to life.

"That's another thing that has stood out to me, just the presence that he has at the line of scrimmage during the preseason."

Lawrence's offseason progress is key for an offense that ranked 25th in the NFL in total yards last season, 26th in points. Lawrence, after throwing 46 touchdown passes with 22 interceptions in 2022-2023, missed seven games with injuries in 2024 and threw 11 touchdowns with seven interceptions.

"He's been just such a great experience to work with him each day, from the first time that we talked and I could hear in his voice how excited he was," Whipple said. "And he's made it so great each day because so knowledgeable, he's eager to learn, he wants to improve.

"Each day he comes to work and wants to get himself better in the unit around him. Anytime you have someone like that, that's all you can ask for as a football coach, a guy who wants to improve."

Whipple described Lawrence's footwork changes as "subtle things you can adjust," adding that the focus has been taking classroom work and translating it to the field effectively.

"It just takes practice, time on tasks, because each guy you're throwing to is different," Whipple said. "Each guy that's covering is a little bit different. We're sticking to a script in terms of each play's footwork, but things can be adjusted here as you go through that process of playing the play. It's a downloading process.

"He's done a great job of the self-evaluation piece. That just goes back to his approach in terms of growing and getting better each day.

"That's his main focus and that's what he's done."

Whipple said Lawrence has done more than just learn the offense from the perspective of his position.

"He's been great around the guys, taking in all the system, then also establishing a leadership within the new unit," he said. "That's kind of who he is. He wants to do whatever it takes to become better for this unit to become better, for the team to become better.

"He's put a lot of trust into us as a coach and staff and he's taken a lot of those things and ran with them."

Whipple, too, said he has been impressed with how the entire offense has approached learning an offense that is considered relatively complex – but that has had success in recent seasons at multiple NFL teams.

"Anytime you have a new system, it just comes down to preparation," Whipple said. "f we want to change plays and be in the right position to be successful in every play, it's going to require a little bit more of an effort on the front end to make sure we're clean on all those checks – when and where we're going to end up switching plays.

"Those guys know that. They've been doing a great job in terms of coming to the facility prepared, looking at the material ahead of time on their own, so when we get a chance, we get another chance to coach it and implement it with them.

"Every unit in the room has done that so far."
