What’s the big deal?

Monday, July 30, 2007

Join jaguars.com senior editor Vic Ketchman as he tackles the fans' tough questions.
Marc from Jacksonville
Why do you think the Jags feel they will be able to successfully implement a vertical passing game this year since they haven't been able to do it in the recent past? Is Dennis Northcutt really going to be able help much in this area, with Matt Jones and Reggie Williams still being counted on to be the top two starting receivers? I don't see how anything has changed other than a new offensive coordinator with a new scheme. What's your take on this?
Vic: Where have you been? Yes, the Jaguars have a new offensive coordinator and a new scheme, and that represents significant change in itself. They also have a new quarterbacks coach, a new tight ends coach and two new wide receivers coaches. They signed Northcutt in free agency and spent two draft picks on wide receivers, one of whom is a first-day pick. The only thing that hasn’t changed is the quarterback.
Rick from Washington, DC
Has Maurice Williams restructured his contract to ensure he stays with the team?
Vic: Yeah, Mo took a pay-cut from a $3.5 million salary this season to $2 million. The restructured contract is for one year and will allow him to become an unrestricted free agent after the season.
Charles from Jacksonville
Reggie Hayward said he was more concerned about the Achilles that didn't rupture and that it is getting better. Sounds like if they had known he had a problem the injury could have been prevented by what he is doing now that is correcting the condition.
Vic: Do you honestly believe that with a battery of trainers, doctors and medical reports there’s anything about any of these players the team is not aware? The Jaguars knew last summer Hayward was troubled by an Achilles. When he went down, it was assumed it was the bad Achilles that blew out, but it was the good one. That’s what Hayward was saying on Saturday; that he has a “good” Achilles that went bad and had to be surgically repaired, and he has a bad Achilles that has to be handled with care. He was saying that it’s the one he didn’t blow out that is the main concern now because the surgically-repaired one is structurally sound. If you believe I tell you the truth, then trust me when I tell you this team is managed with great care and expertise. There’s no carelessness here.
G.W. from Hurricane, WV
I just watched coach Del Rio's press conference and wondered why he put George Wrighster on PUP for just the first week of camp?
Vic: PUP is where you put players who haven’t passed their physical. In other words, they haven’t been cleared to practice.
Ryan from Jacksonville
Why do you think Art Monk is not in the Hall of Fame?
Vic: He lacks a defining postseason moment. Michael Irvin and Lynn Swann, for example, have postseason catches and performances that define their careers. Those two receivers were absolute postseason monsters. That’ll usually get you elected, if you have the other credentials. The Monk situation is why I can’t help but wonder what the Hall of Fame committee is going to do about Marvin Harrison, who also lacks postseason fame.
Kelvin from Atlanta, GA
I'm in Hawaii on vacation but gotta get in my Jaguars.com quickly. How is the atmosphere in Jacksonville with training camp underway?
Vic: I’ll judge the training camp atmosphere based on Monday night’s practice and Friday night’s scrimmage. Those are the barometers I use.
Carl from Jacksonville
What are your thoughts on the Jags signing Tim Couch?
Vic: With Quinn Gray on PUP, they needed another quarterback and Couch was the next guy on their list. They had already decided against signing Daunte Culpepper, who is probably looking for more of a commitment than the Jaguars wanted to give him; certainly more of a commitment than they’ve given Couch, which is to say nothing more than an opportunity in training camp to show what he can do.
Elizabeth from Green Cove Springs, FL
The “Ask Vic” daily fix, the Oklahoma to open training camp, the Drum Line postgame celebrations, your “Ask Vic” annual golf tournament; the traditions are building. We just need time to become the next great NFL city. I pray that time is on our side, but I fear it isn't.
Vic: Buy time by buying tickets. That’ll work.
Jeff from Fullerton, CA
With the signing of Tim Couch, what do you see happening to Quinn Gray and David Garrard?
Vic: Garrard is the Jaguars’ backup quarterback. I think Garrard is as firm in that role as Byron Leftwich is in his role as the team’s starting quarterback. That doesn’t mean the two aren’t in constant competition with each other but, at this point in time, I believe they are firm in their roles as number one and number two. Tim Couch, in my opinion, is not a threat to either of those roles. He has been signed, as I said above, because the Jaguars need another arm. Now that he’s in camp, he’ll be observed. He’ll have an opportunity to compete for a roster spot which, logically, would mean he’s competing for the number three quarterback job.
Trent from Tallahassee, FL
Is Mike Walker really that good?
Vic: Yeah, he’s the real deal. I can’t think of the last time Walker didn’t do something in a practice that caused me to notice him. I think he’s more than a candidate to be a starting wide receiver. I think he’s a candidate to become this team’s number one receiver.
Emil from Tallahassee, FL
You have to give us some insight on the Tim Couch signing. There are a couple wires in my head that just fizzled.
Vic: : What’s the big deal here? Eighty percent of my e-mails this morning are from people who are having a panic attack about the Jaguars signing Couch. Why? He’s not on the final roster. He’s not replacing Leftwich or Garrard. He was signed to a minimum-wage, no-signing-bonus contract for the purpose of seeing what he has in the tank. Let’s not forget that once upon a time this guy was the first pick of his draft. Let’s not forget that he played for an expansion team that decided a young quarterback didn’t need pass-protection. Really, what chance did he have in Cleveland? Then came arm and shoulder surgeries and his career suddenly came to an end. He wants to give it another shot and the Jaguars have agreed to take a look. That makes your wires fizzle?
Ernie from Jacksonville
I found Greg's comments about marketing asinine. Everyone knows who the Jaguars are. The Jaguars are hampered by two things: a culture of negativity, for which Byron Leftwich is the lighting rod, and comparison to college football, where more than one loss basically ends your season. Expecting marketing to fill the stadium is like expecting David Beckham to make soccer popular as a pro sport in America. Greg should know better.
Vic: I love your David Beckham analogy.
Jordan from Lincoln, NE
Today is the big day. I don't think I have to ask if you're excited.
Vic: Yeah, today is the day the Jaguars do the Oklahoma, which is always the feature drill of any training camp. Coach Del Rio has been great in promoting this event. This is a gift to you, folks, from the coach, and I really appreciate that he allows me to pick a few Oklahoma matchups. Here are four the coach has approved: DT Tony McDaniel vs. OT Richard Collier (battle of undrafted stars), LB Justin Durant vs. TE Marcedes Lewis (clash of high picks), G Uche Nwaneri vs. DT Rob Meier (young stud vs. old gun), and G Vince Manuwai vs. DT Derek Landri (shake down the thunder). The rest is up to the weather man. No rain, please.
