JACKSONVILLE – The early moves had some relatively big news.
The Jaguars on Friday reduced their active roster from 90 to 75 players, with two prominent names – Mychal Rivera and Marquez Williams – among the transactions.
The Jaguars must reduce the roster to 53 by Saturday at 4 p.m.
Rivera, a tight end who signed with the Jaguars as an unrestricted free agent from the Oakland Raiders in March, was placed on injured reserve Friday along with sixth-year safety Jeron Johnson. Williams, a seventh-round selection in the 2017 NFL Draft who was competing for the team's fullback position, was waived/injured.
Because they were placed on IR before Saturday at 4 p.m., Rivera and Johnson are not eligible to return this season.
The Jaguars on Friday also waived:
Undrafted rookie tight end Caleb Blueitt, first-year offensive lineman Malcolm Bunche, undrafted rookie linebacker P.J. Davis, seventh-year linebacker Akeem Dent, fifth-year running back Jonathan Grimes, sixth-year running back DuJuan Harris, fourth-year cornerback Charles James II, undrafted rookie defensive tackle Tueni Lupeamanu, first-year wide receiver Larry Pinkard, fourth-year offensive lineman Demetrius Rhaney, first-year wide receiver Jamal Robinson and undrafted rookie cornerback Dwayne Thomas.
Rivera moving to IR and the release of Blueitt leaves the Jaguars with five active tight ends: Marcedes Lewis, Alex Ellis, Neal Sterling, Ben Koyack and David Grinnage.
Waiving/injured Williams leaves veteran Tommy Bohanon as the lone fullback on the roster.
