JACKSONVILLE – A familiar veteran has a chance to get his wish.
Marcedes Lewis, the Jaguars' longest-tenured player who had talked throughout last season about finishing his career in Jacksonville, will get that chance.
Lewis, an 11-year veteran, signed a contract to remain with the team Wednesday night, the Jaguars announced. Lewis had become an unrestricted free agent Wednesday at 4 p.m., the start of the 2016 league year.
Lewis, a first-round selection in the 2006 NFL Draft, has been with the team longer than any other player. The next-most tenured player on the roster is defensive end Tyson Alualu, a first-round selection in the 2010 NFL Draft.
Lewis, a Pro Bowl selection in 2010 and long one of the league's better run-blocking tight ends, caught 16 passes for 226 yards last season. He continued to play a key role last season in the offense opposite free-agent tight end Julius Thomas.
In 10 seasons, Lewis has caught 331 passes for 4,015 yards and 27 touchdowns.
