JACKSONVILLE – A few familiar names are no longer on the active roster.

That was the result of the Jaguars' three moves to reduce the roster to 75 players, moves that came Tuesday and involved Bjoern Werner, Nic Jacobs and James Sample.

Sample, a fourth-round selection by the Jaguars in the 2015 NFL Draft, was placed on injured reserve. He had been expected to compete with Johnathan Cyprien for the starting strong safety position but sustained a shoulder injury in Preseason Week 1 against the New York Jets.

Sample played in just four games as a rookie because of a forearm injury.

Werner, a former first-round selection in the NFL Draft by Indianapolis, was one of two players released by the team Tuesday. He had been signed by the team in May following his release by the Colts.

The team also released Jacobs, a third-year veteran who signed with the Jaguars in September 2014 after originally signing with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2014. Jacobs played in 24 games over two seasons with the Jaguars.

NFL active rosters must be reduced to 75 players by Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET. Teams must reduce active rosters to 53 by Saturday, September 1 at 4 p.m. ET. The Jaguars visit the Atlanta Falcons in the 2016 preseason finale Thursday at 7 p.m.
