Derrick Harvey, the Jaguars’ first-round draft choice from Florida and the eighth player selected overall this spring, signed a contract on Wednesday with the team. Length and terms of the contract are undisclosed.
After Jaguars starters retire to the bench, and that’s expected to happen early in the game, it’ll be all about roster spots the rest of the night. For players on the cut “bubble,” Thursday night’s preseason finale at FedEx Field could make or break careers and life-long dreams.

It’s a meaningless preseason finale. Long before it’s over, most players’ thoughts will have turned toward the season-opener, but not for players such as D’Juan Woods. For Woods, Thursday’s game in Washington is the most important game of his life.
The Jaguars released five players to trim the roster to the 75-man limit. Included in Tuesday’s cuts were veterans WR John Broussard and TE Isaac Smolko and first-year players DE Alex Boston, WR Clyde Edwards and WR Jeron Harvey.

Wide receiver Jerry Porter is likely to miss the Jaguars’ season-opener in Tennessee on Sept. 7. That would seem to be the logical conclusion based on coach Jack Del Rio’s guidelines for Porter’s return from hamstring surgery.

TAMPA—The big play was missing but that might’ve been more a product of design than a failure to get open. Either way, the Jaguars were satisfied with their performance in Saturday night’s dink and dunk fest against the Tampa Bay Bucs. The Jaguars won “both” games; 10-7 and 23-17.

A Jaguars team with high expectations for the 2008 season will try on Saturday to give its fans reason to believe in now. Yeah, it’s just a preseason game but, on the heels of a downer performance a week ago, the Jaguars would like to kick it up a notch against the Bucs at Raymond James Stadium.

When they signed him in free agency in 2005, Reggie Hayward was supposed to be a long-term fix at defensive end and his performance that season supported the expectation. Then came the Achilles injury in the ’06 season opener and that left Hayward to struggle through his comeback season in ’07 and now, in what should be the absolute prime of his career, Hayward is facing a preseason game this Saturday he referred to as “a great test.”

In the emotion of the moment, Jack Del Rio regrettably misspoke.

Defensive end Reggie Hayward returned to practice on Monday and Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio reported that Hayward “continues to progress” in his recovery from a training camp hamstring injury that sidelined Hayward in the first two preseason games.
Jack Del Rio’s stern postgame comments on Saturday were not lost on his team. Team leaders Paul Spicer and Rashean Mathis are challenging the defense and the Jaguars team in general to play better in Tampa this Saturday than they did this past Saturday in losing to Miami.

Training camp ended this past Thursday but based on what Jack Del Rio saw Saturday night in his Jaguars’ 19-14 loss to the Miami Dolphins, he’d probably like to reopen camp on Monday.
